Daily task:Perform laboratory activity involving chemical reactions. Distinguish evidences of chemical reactions

What is the difference between chemical change and physical change?

Asks: Cite examples of changes that you observed around you.

Essential Question: What are the evidences of chemical reaction?

Chemical Reaction! Oxygen is vital to life.

Phlogiston Theory-early chemical theory (in burning) Antoine Lavoisier- Theory of Oxidation A material burn whn reacts with oxygen

For burning to occur, 3 factors should be present in proper condition 1.fuel 2.Oxygen 3.heat

What is a Chemical Reaction? It is a chemical change in which one or more substances are destroyed and one or more new substances are created. BEFORE H 2 gas and O 2 gas AFTER H 2 O liquid

Evidence for a Chemical Reaction 1) Evolution of light or heat .

Evidence for a Chemical Reaction 2) Temperature change (increase or decrease) to the surroundings.

Evidence for a Chemical Reaction 3) Formation of a gas (bubbling or an odor) other than boiling.

Evidence for a Chemical Reaction 4) Color change (due to the formation of a new substance).

Evidence for a Chemical Reaction 5) Formation of a precipitate (a new solid forms) from the reaction of two aqueous solutions.

Parts of a Chemical Reaction Chemical equations are a description of the reaction It has reactants and products Reactants  Products Reactants : Substances that are destroyed by the chemical change ( bonds break ). Products : Substances created by the chemical change ( new bonds form ). The arrow () is read as “yields”.

A reaction can be described several ways : A.In a sentence ; every item is a word Copper reacts with chlorine to form copper (II) chloride . B. In a word equation ; some symbols used Copper + chlorine copper (II ) chloride

C. A skeleton equation ; uses chemical formulas rather than words to identify the reactants and products of a chemical reaction. The word equation Iron (s) + chlorine (g)  iron (III) chloride (s) The skeleton/formula equation Fe(s) + Cl 2 (g)  FeCl 3 (s)

Activity 1. Copy and fill in the table below. Your answer will be based from the following sentence reactions.

Write the following sentence reactions into formula equation and identify which is/ are the reactant (s) and product ( s) Example; Methane combines with oxygen gas to form carbon dioxide and water CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O reactants: Methane and oxygen gas products: carbon dioxide and water Activity 2

1. Solid Magnesium and an aqueous hydrochloric acid ( HCl ) react to produce aqueous magnesium chloride (MgCl 2 ) and hydrogen gas, H 2 2.Aqueous nitric acid (HNO 3 )reacts with, solid magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH) 2 to produce aqueous magnesium nitrate ,Mg(NO 3 ) 2 and water , H 2 O

3.Solid calcium reacts with solid sulfur to produce solid calcium sulfide ( CaS ) 4.Iron reacts with copper sulfate (CuSO4) and forms iron (III) sulfate (FeSO4) and copper

Thank You! Keep Safe and Hydrated all the time!!
