INTRODUCTION
An essentialoilis aconcentratedhydrophobicliquid containingvolatile
aromacompoundsfromplants.Theyarealsoknownas volatileoils,etherealoils,
aetheroleaetc.Essentialoilsaremadeup of highlyvolatilesubstanceswhichcanbe
extractedfrom numerous plant species.Distillation based recoveryprocessessuchas
steamandvacuum distillationare preferredfortheextractionofessentialoils fromplant
materials.Virtuallyallnaturally occurringessential oils are made up of hydrocarbons
such as camphene, pinene, limonene, phellandrene, cedrene, andoxygenated
hydrocarbons such as alcohols,aldehydes,esters,ketones,
Lactones, phenolsand organic acids,Theessential oil get their odoursfrom the
Oxygenated compounds contained in them and these confer stability on the oil against
oxidation.
The hydrocarbons are less stable and they are
responsible for the degradation observed in the oils. The hydrocarbons contained in the
essential oils are often removed so that the oils can be more stable and still retain their
odoursand flavours.

EXPERIMENT
CHEMISTRYPROJECT-EXTRACTION OFESSENTIALOILS 14
MaterialsRequired:
•Steamgenerator(CopperVessel)
•Roundbottomflask (500ml),
•Conicalflask
•Condenser
•Glasstubes
•Ironstand
•Sandbath
•Separatoryfunnel
•Tripodstands
•Burners
•Ajwain(Carum)
•Petroleumether(60-80°C)
•Saunf(Aniseed)
Procedure:
1.Set the apparatus as shown in the picture of Experimental Setup. The
apparatus consists of a steam generator connected to theround
bottom flaskthrougha glassinlettube. Theflask is connected to a
water condenser through a glass outlet tube. Condenserisfurther
attached toa receiverthrough an adaptor.

2.Take about 750ml of water in the steam generator and start
heating to producesteam.
3.In the round bottom flask take about 75g of crushed
saunf(aniseed).
4.Avigorouscurrent ofsteamfromsteamgeneratoris
passed throughthe roundbottom
flask.
5.Apartofthesteamcondenses in
the round bottom flask. As more
andmore steamispassed, the
steam volatile components of
saunfpass through
condenseralongwith steam.Thesecontentson
condensation arecollected in the receiver.
6.The contentsin the roundbottom flaskmay be heated by a
bunsenburnertopreventexcessivecondensationof steam.
7.The processofsteamdistillationis continued forabouthalf
an hour.
8.Transferthe distillateto aseparating funnel andextract
with 20mlportions of petroleum ether 3 times.
9.Combinethepetroleumetherextractsina250mlconical
flask anddryit withthe helpof anhydrous sodium sulphate.

10.Removethe solventfromthe dried filtrateby careful
distillation in awater bath. The essentialoil is left
behind in the distillationflask.
11.Findtheweightoftheextractedessentialoil.Note the
colour, odourandweightof the essential oil.

Observations:
1.Saunf(Aniseed):
•WeightofSaunftaken=100g Initial
Weight ofthebottle=10g(x)
•Weight of bottle+essential oil= 11.25g(y)
Weight of essential extracted= (y-x)= 1.25g
Percentageof essential
