PLANT FAIRY
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

WARM UP
List out your favorite fruits and vegetables.
Have you ever visited a park or a garden?
What did you see in the park or the garden?

Plants are one of the most
important things on
planet Earth.

WITHOUT PLANTS
THERE WOULD BE :
No food to eat.
No fresh air to
breathe.

Plants have different parts and each part
has different roles to play. The two main
basic parts of the plants are root and shoot.
The part of the plant
that growsunder the
ground is called the
root system.
The part of the
plant that grows
above the
ground is called
the shoot
system.
Shoot system
Root system

Types of roots:
Tap roots:
When a single thick main root grows
below the stem which goes deep into
the soil, is called tap root.
Many small, thin roots grow from
the main root.
Main root is thick and the side roots
are thin.

Examples of Tap Roots
Carrot Beetroot Radish Hibiscus Rose

Fibrous roots:
When a bunch of many thin and
bushy roots grow below the stem, it
is called as fibrous root.
There is no main root in this
system.
All the roots are of the same size.

Examples of Fibrous roots:
Onion
Bamboo
Grass
Rice
Coconut

Functions of root:
Roots hold a plant firmly to
the soil.
Roots absorb water and
nutrients from the soil and
pass them to the plant.
Some roots also store food in
them. Ex: Carrot, radish, turnip
are the roots that we eat.

THE SHOOT SYSTEM:
The part of the plant that grows
above the soil is called the shoot.
It has the stem.
Branches , leaves , bud , flowers
and fruits grow on the stem.

THE STEM:
Some plants have soft
stems while others have
hard stems.
Based on the stem type
the plants are classified
into different types.

TREES
Trees are big and tall plants with strong and
woody stem called trunk.
Examples

Shrubs
Shrubs have brown
and thick stem but
not as thick as trees.
They have many
branches and are
bushy.

Herbs
Herbs are very small plants with soft and green stems.
Their leaves, flowers, seeds are used for flavouring food, cooking,
medicines or perfumes.
Examples

Climbers
Climbers have very
soft and weak stems
that cannot keep the
plant straight.
They need some
support to climb up.
Bottle gourd

Creepers
Plants with weak stem that cannot stand straight and
spread on the ground are called creepers.
Examples

Functions of the stem:
1.The stem supports the upper parts of a
plant.
2.It carries water and nutrients from
the roots to the other parts of the
plant.
3.It carries food made in the leaves to
the other parts of the plant.
4.Some stems like sugarcane, potato
and ginger store food. These stems
can be eaten.

Leaves:
The leaf is an important part of a
plant.
Most plants have green leaves and
it grows on the branches of a plant.
They differ in size and shape.
Leaves are called the food factoryor
the kitchen of a plant because they
make food for the plant.

Leaves
The green colour of the leaf is due to the presence of a
substance called chlorophyll.
A leaf makes food in the presence of sunlight, water, carbon
dioxide and chlorophyll. This process is called as
Photosynthesis.
There are tiny openings on the underside of the leaves
called stomata .They help the plants to breathe.
Some plants such as fenugreek (methi) , mint and spinach
store food in their leaves.

FLOWERS
Flowers are the most
beautiful part of a plant.
A flower blooms from a
bud.
Many flowers have a
pleasant fragrance.
Cauliflower and broccoli
are examples of some
flowers that we eat.

FRUITS
The flowers of different
plants grow into fruits.
Fruits are fleshy, tasty
and juicy.
Most of the fruits
contain seeds inside
them.
A fruit protects the seeds
within it.

Seeds
Most plants grow from their
seeds.
Each seed contains a baby plant
inside them.
The baby plant grows when the
seed gets air, water and sunlight.
It keeps growing till becomes an
adult plant.
The process of a seed growing
into a new plant is called
germination.
