CLAUSE Independent clause Dependent clause
What is clause? A group of words that contain subject and verb and may or may not make a complete sense. Ex: I was doing my homework. Ex: While my mom called me.
1. Independent clause: makes a complete sense EX: She needs help. 2. Dependent clause: does not make a complete sense. EX: What you need will not be found in this store. I have a good friend who works all day. Because I need help, I will borrow some money from the office.
Types of Dependent Clause In grammar, clauses can be classified as independent or dependent, and they can function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. Dependent clause: Noun clause Adjective clause Adverb clause
1. Noun clause A noun clause functions as a noun in a sentence. Ex: what you said surprised me. Explanation; Noun clause ______ what you said Function; this clause acts as the subject of the verb “surprised.”
2. Adjective clause An adjective clause (also called relative clauses) modify a noun or pronoun. EX: The book that you lent me is fascinating. Explanation: Adjective clause : that you lent me Function ; this clause modifies the noun “book.”
3. Adverb clause An adverb clause modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb, often indicating time, reason, condition, or manner. Ex; I will call you when I arrive. Explanation; Adverb clause ; when I arrive Function ; this clause modifies the verb “call”, indicating the time of the action .
