NET ZERO EMISSION BRAZIL

CONTENT Introduction Problem statement Global and national policies/actions on net zero emissions Country issues and justifications Actions taken by the Government on net zero emissions Arguments for and against your position Key negotiation points

INTRODUCTION

NET ZERO EMMISSION Net-zero emissions, or “net zero,” will be achieved when all emissions released by human activities are counterbalanced by removing carbon from the atmosphere in a process known as carbon removal Under the Paris Agreement, countries agreed to limit warming to well below 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F), ideally to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F). Global climate impacts that are already unfolding under the current 1.1 degrees C (1.98 degrees F) of warming — from melting ice to devastating heat waves and more intense storms — show the urgency of minimizing temperature increase.

PROBLEM STATEMENT deforestation has decreased significantly in amazon this year, the forest is still burning at an alarming rate because the greenhouse effect of excess CO2 and methane emissions makes the rainforest hotter and drier, resulting in wildfires. From January to June 2023, fires in the Brazilian Amazon have surged by 14.26% compared to the same period in 2022.

COUNTRY ISSUES AND JUSTIFICATIONS FINANCE Brazil will require an estimated $200 billion (BRL 1 trillion) investment to reach its 2030 climate goals POLITICAL The CAT rates Brazil’s ambition on climate change policy as "Insufficient". This rating is an improvement from our previous “Highly insufficient” rating, driven by the 2022 NDC submission ENVIRONMENTAL Brazil, like any country in the world, faces threats to the environment. 90% of the Brazilian Municipalities have environmental problems such as fires, deforestation .

Actions taken by the Government on net zero emissions 1) Sustainable Aviation Fuels – “ Combustive do Future” 2) zero methane program and federal strategy 3) The ABC Plan had a relevant role in the adoption of low-carbon agriculture technologies . 4) Reducing Legal Deforestation: The CONSERV Concept
