Nowruz, also spelled as "Norooz" or "Nawroz," is the Persian New Year, celebrated by millions of people across the world, particularly in Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and parts of the Middle East and South Asia. Rooted in Zoroastrian traditions, Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new year in the Persian calendar, usually occurring on or around March 20th or 21st. It is a festival of renewal, joy, and cultural unity, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
### **Origins and History**
Nowruz has been celebrated for over 3,000 years, dating back to ancient Persia. It is believed to have originated during the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE) and was formally established as a significant festival during the reign of Darius I. The festival has deep connections to Zoroastrianism, an ancient Persian religion that emphasizes the duality of good and evil and the importance of nature, fire, and renewal. Although Zoroastrianism declined with the rise of Islam, Nowruz remained an integral part of Persian culture and continued to be observed by diverse ethnic and religious communities.
### **Cultural and Regional Significance**
Nowruz is widely celebrated in Iran, where it is a national holiday lasting for two weeks. Other countries, including Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey (especially among Kurds), Iraq, and parts of India and Pakistan, also observe Nowruz with regional variations. In 2010, the United Nations recognized Nowruz as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity," highlighting its importance as a global cultural event.
### **Preparations and Traditions**
The lead-up to Nowruz begins weeks in advance, with extensive cleaning of homes known as *Khaneh Tekani* (shaking the house). This practice symbolizes getting rid of the past year’s negativity and making way for renewal and prosperity. People also buy new clothes, decorate their homes, and prepare special foods.
One of the most significant traditions is setting up the *Haft-Seen* table, a display of seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter "S" (س). These items usually include:
1. **Sabzeh** (sprouted wheat or lentils) – Symbolizing rebirth and growth.
2. **Senjed** (dried oleaster fruit) – Representing love and wisdom.
3. **Seer** (garlic) – A sign of protection and good health.
4. **Seeb** (apple) – Symbolizing beauty and health.
5. **Samanu** (sweet wheat pudding) – A symbol of strength and prosperity.
6. **Serkeh** (vinegar) – Representing patience and wisdom.
7. **Sumac** (a red spice) – Symbolizing the sunrise and the triumph of good over evil.
Additional items often included on the Haft-Seen table are a mirror (symbolizing reflection), candles (representing light), painted eggs (for fertility), a goldfish (representing life), and a holy book or poetry by Persian poets like Hafez or Ferdowsi.
