What is Cloud Burst Causes Characteristics Safety Measures
Cloud Burst – Explained A cloudburst is an extreme amount of rainfall in a short period of time , usually over a small area , leading to sudden and severe flooding . A cloudburst is defined as rainfall of more than 100 mm per hour within a localized area.
Cloud Burst – Causes Orographic Effect Moist air hits mountains, rises rapidly, cools, and condenses into dense clouds. Convection Rapid upward movement of warm air causes clouds to grow vertically and release sudden rain. Blocked Clouds When clouds get trapped in valleys or mountain ranges, they release rain all at once.
Cloud Burst – Characteristics Highly localized (covers just a few kilometers). Very intense downpour in a short span (minutes to a few hours). Often occurs in hilly and mountainous regions . Difficult to predict accurately.
Cloud Burst – Impacts Flash floods that wash away houses, roads, and infrastructure. Landslides in hilly areas. Loss of lives, livestock, and agriculture. Severe disruption of local communities.
Cloud Burst – Safety Measures Improved weather forecasting technology (satellites, Doppler radars). Early warning systems for local communities. Avoiding construction in flood-prone valleys. Planting vegetation to reduce soil erosion. Emergency response training and awareness.
Cloud Burst – Real Examples In mid-August 2025 , a devastating cloudburst in Buner, Pakistan, dumped over 150 mm of rain in under an hour , causing massive flash floods and landslides that killed hundreds and left many missing. O n August 14, 2025 , a cloudburst struck Chositi village in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir, killing over 60 people and injuring hundreds.
