What will reaching the goal give you? What do you want to achieve in [theme]? How will you know you've reached your goal? How will you know the problem has been solved? Global Coach Certification Program – M3 10
Step 2: Reality Global Coach Certification Program – M3 11 Becoming aware of the actual situation the coachee is in
Step 2: Reality Example questions to discover the reality of one's client What's happening to you now? What, when, with whom and how often? What is the result of that? Why is this theme a problem? CLEAR Global Coach Certification Program – M3 20 Contracting Action Listening Exploring Review
Step 1: Contracting Global Coach Certification Program – M3 21 Establish what outcomes they want to achieve. Establish the scope of the coaching and setting ground rules for working together
Contracting Conversation Coach: We have around an hour, so let’s check what would be useful to you today. Last time we met, you suggested you may like to focus on your lead responsibility for improving diversity in the workplace. Is that still the case? Client: Yes, I’d like to look at the board presentation I have next week. Coach: Great. Where would you like to get to by the end of the hour? Client: The paper has gone in, and I am fairly confident but would like to walk through it and think about the emphasis and the questions I may be asked. I’d like to feel confident that I have covered all the issues. Coach: What would you like from me in the session? Client: I’d like you to act as sounding board and help me identify the difficult questions. Coach: Okay. I’ll keep track of time and maybe make a few notes and give you a time check ten minutes before the hour is up so we can summarize and see if we need to discuss anything else. Okay? Global Coach Certification Program – M3 22
Step 2:Listening Global Coach Certification Program – M3 23 Listening with empathy to help them to gain an understanding of their situation and personal insight.
Step 3:Exploring Global Coach Certification Program – M3 24 The coach is looking to help the coachee understand their emotional connection with the current state, what they want to change and how they might emotionally connect with a different future state.
Exploring Global Coach Certification Program – M3 25 Two Elements Exploring 1: Helping the coachee to understand their present situation and the personal impact the situation is having on themselves. Exploring 2: Challenging the coachee to think through possibilities for future action in resolving the situation.
Exploring Conversation “So, what I’m hearing you say is that when you get to this midpoint in the presentation, you’re worried that John will become challenging around the figures because he always picks up in the stats. Yes?” “I wonder if you notice how well you present information and how you’re really good at presenting it using both the paper and the PowerPoint? You come across as being really confident about your data.” “So, what is the worst thing that John could ask you? Where are you least confident about the paper?” “What happens when you get anxious about what John may say?” “What happens when you aren’t concerned about what John may ask? How can you do more of that on the day?” “You said John likes an injection of humor . You have some of that, but how can you use that more if John challenges you?” “So, let me summarize what you’ve said about what you’re confident about and what you might do differently.” Global Coach Certification Program – M3 26
Action Global Coach Certification Program – M3 27 Coach is supporting the coachee in choosing a way ahead and deciding the next step.
Step 4: Action The coach asks the coachee to envision enacting his/her commitments and see how it fits. In this stage, we ask “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” and “how.” Avoid using “why” questions. Global Coach Certification Program – M3 28
Step 4: Action Question So, given what we’ve discussed, what can you do between now and next week? Who needs to action that? You or someone on your team? How are you feeling about delivering this presentation right now? How can you get to that positive state before you go into the board meeting? What other actions have you highlighted today? Global Coach Certification Program – M3 29
Step 5: Review Global Coach Certification Program – M3 30 The coach reviews, reinforcing ground covered, decisions made and value added
Step 5: Review Questions In summary, what will you do as a result of this session? What has been helpful? What has been less helpful to you today? Is there anything else you want to mention before we close? Global Coach Certification Program – M3 31
STEPPPA Global Coach Certification Program – M3 32 Subject Emotion Target Identification Plan Pace Action Perception
Step 1: Subject Global Coach Certification Program – M3 33 Identify and understand the subject and context of the discussion.
Step 1: Subject The role of the coach is to support the client by separating any emotions which may cloud the discussion and hinder the development of any future goals set. Example questions: What would you like to discuss? Is there an area you would like to focus on? Global Coach Certification Program – M3 34
Step 2: Target Identification Global Coach Certification Program – M3 35 The coachee is encouraged to establish an attainable target or outcome, following the SMART goal. If a goal cannot be immediately formed, then the coach should gently question the client and guide them towards the desired outcome.
Step 2: Target Identification Questions What would you like to be the outcome of this session? What are your long-term goals? When do you plan to achieve your current goals? Global Coach Certification Program – M3 36
Step 3: Emotion Global Coach Certification Program – M3 37 Sometimes emotions will aid oneself in the drive towards a goal but often they can also act as a hindrance, blocking perfectly attainable targets. It must be considered whether emotions are going to act restrictively, or as a motivator en route to these goals.
Step 3: Emotion Questions Global Coach Certification Program – M3 38 How much do you want your goal – on a scale of 1 to 10? If you achieve your goal – how will you feel? How will it look? How motivated are you to reach this goal? What would make you more motivated? What is it exactly that excites you about this goal? How will you know when you have achieved your goals?
Step 4: Perception Global Coach Certification Program – M3 39 Understanding of the wider context of the mentee’s situation and goals
Step 4: Perception Questions Global Coach Certification Program – M3 40 What do you feel about the current situation? What have you already tried? What problems still remain? Is your target definitely what you need at the moment? What choices are you currently making? What other choices are there? What are your impacts on other people? What are future impacts? How could you play to your strengths? What could you do if resources (time, money, etc.) were not a limitation?
Step 5: Plan Global Coach Certification Program – M3 41 Once a target and overall path are initially decided upon, it is necessary to develop and systematically organize the first steps along said path.
Step 5: Plan Questions Global Coach Certification Program – M3 42 What feels like the natural next step in the process? What will that open doors for you to do? How will the options you have chosen move you closer to your goals? Look back once you have achieved your goals – what were the steps?
Step 6: Pace Global Coach Certification Program – M3 43 The pace of the plan should be decided through setting timescales and deadlines for the completion of each individual task within.
Step 6: Pace Global Coach Certification Program – M3 44 When will you take each of these steps? What is the timeline for your progress? How will you review and measure progress? What support might you require? Are these deadlines realistic?
Step 7: Action Global Coach Certification Program – M3 45 Process should be reviewed, including each individual decision that has been made.
Step 7: Action Global Coach Certification Program – M3 46 What have you learnt from the session? What may need to be adjusted? What possible barriers may you reach during your first stage? Is your plan sensible?
