Codes and conventions of a tv listing. Sehrish Jabeen Main image Date and Time Title Colour Scheme Pull Quote Secondary Page numbers Images Drop cap Columns

Main Image The main image is the biggest image on the page. It is relevant to the article and should be big and bold so that it intrigues the readers. Here it is placed in the middle, across both pages. The main image also establishes to the reader who is featured in the article. Its dominant to the smaller main body text. The main image for our TV listing will be of whole group, this is because, in the article we will be talking about why we chose to search in physical disabilities at educational institutions and what our opinions are as well as what we found during the construction of the documentary.

Title and Pull Quote The t itle summarises what the article is going to be about; therefore it should be interesting for the reader to see. It also should be big and bold so that it stands out . Within this title, there is a use of a p ull q uote, it used to emphasise a main line that has importance behind it. In this case, the pull quote is relevant to the article so it has been used. Pull quotes are a reflection of the contents of the article, which is why they need to be interesting to make the audience read on. For our TV listing double page spread, we are going to be making the title big and bold so that it stands out and catches the readers attention as soon as they see the double page spread. We will also be using a pull quote as our subheading, which is relevant to the topic of our documentary. This will enable the audience to get gist of what our article will be about.

Page Numbers/Date and Time This a typical convention across all magazine double page spreads. It is placed at the bottom left corner of the page and is in a very small size. It enables the audience to navigate around the magazine. In order to maintain the codes and conventions, we will be using page numbers on the double page spreads. It is important to let the audience know what date and time the programme is going to be aired on TV so that they can actually watch it.

Columns and Drop Cap There are three columns that are used within a tv listing article, they help make the article look neat and tidy as well as making it easier to read. Drop cap is often used at the start of the paragraph to connote the beginning of the article. To follow the codes and conventions, we are also going to have three columns for our article so that it is clear to read and looks tidy. Also, a drop cap will be used for the start of our article as this will enable the readers to see where the article starts.

Colour Scheme The colours within a double page spread can reflect what type of article it is. If it is bright, it would usually initiate that it is about a fun, loud topic whereas dark colours can imply that it is something quite serious. The topic for our documentary is going to be about physical disability, so the colours used need to be suitable – we have to make sure that the message being conveyed isn’t a bad one. Although bright colours could be used to show equality, we have to make sure we don’t make it look like we are making the physically disabled look like the subordinate.

By Line A by line is a line on the double page spread with the creditors name on it – who wrote the article. It is not always shown on a double age article, however it is usually placed on an image with the individuals name on it, allowing the reader to see who created the article and who took the picture. It is presented in a small font size so that it isn’t as noticeable nor bigger than the article. We will be using a by line to credit the individuals that wrote the article and took the photos.

Secondary/Minor Images These are used to add more interest in the listing, the images have to be relevant to the article. They are much more smaller in comparison to the main image. It can also allow the readers to get a better idea of what we’re referring to regarding the article. However, it is not necessary for a tv listing to have secondary images . The minor images we are gong to use will be relevant to what our article is about - within our article we are going to be including an interview with the head teacher and his opinion so we may include an image of him as one of our minor images.

Mise en Scene Mise en scene is everything in the surrounding, so things like props, clothing, lighting etc. The images used in the double page spread are often a reflection of the individual . In our images, we have made sure that the background is relevant to the individual we are including. As well as the props, we have used things such as desks and files when using images of teachers. Also when using images of the subject we are talking about, we have used an environment that shows ‘more’ about the individual.
