Codes and Conventions All magazine covers have their mast-head positioned at the top of the page with it covering the top quarter. They also all have artists names as their sub heading to make readers aware of who is present. Cover design: bold and visually striking cover images featuring musicians or bands, accompanied by attention- grabbing headlines and text. Featuring articles: in-depth interviews, profiles, and articles about popular or emerging artists, along with reviews of albums, concerts, and music festivals. Photography: high-quality photographs capturing live performances, backstage moments, and artist portraits, often showcasing the personality and style of the musicians. Layout and design: dynamic layout with vibrant colours and creative typography.

Codes and conventions Masthead- commonly found at the top of the magazine. In a music magazine it is generally the name of the magazine or the logo. The mastheads are always in bold and easily visible font which relates to the music genre (e.g., rock would be a bold dark colored font).  Headings, subheadings and tag lines- headings are usually used to link the main image and to let the reader know what it is about. For example, if the main photograph is of Adele, the heading is most likely going to be her name. This lets the reader recognize who is on the cover. Although the headings are recognizable and clearly visible, they generally never overpower the masthead. Subheadings are most likely to be found underneath headlines and will be a short sentence or phrase to get the reader's attention to the story. Tag lines also draw in the reader's attention and are generally very short so that they can be read quickly. This can link to the main article and headings and subheadings or can be used to advertise something else for example, a special edition.

Codes and conventions Coverlines- these are usually found at the left or/and right-hand side of the page on the front cover. They are used to tease the reader by giving them a short insight to what may be in the magazine. It can also give a general idea of what the magazine is about (music) as the cover lines may give an indication of who the stories involve, such as musicians or singers, therefore the audience can guess this is a music magazine due to what the stories are based on. Tagline- the tagline is usually places above the masthead yet does ow overpower it. It is used to attract attention by either stating that the magazine is a ‘special addition’ or that there is an interesting story in the magazine. It is used to make the magazine sell.

Codes and conventions Colour schemes- these are quite important when making a music magazine. They can be used to make a magazine look feminine or masculine (which would be beneficial if you wanted to aim the magazine at a particular target audience). Colour can also set the genre of music that the magazine is aimed at. Black and white are commonly found in every magazine, along with one other colour. Red is also a common colour as it is a neutral gender colour. Music is mainly targeted at any age group or gender; therefore, the colour scheme should suit both genders and age groups unless it must be specific to either. The colour also adds to the overall aesthetic of the magazine. If it doesn’t look good people won't want to buy it. Too much colour can cause the magazine to look messy and hard to read, so no more than 3-4 colours are generally used.  Buzz words- buzz words are words such as ‘free’ or ‘plus’. They are used to draw the reader attention and to make them want to buy the magazine. If someone is getting something for free or extra information added from the magazine, they are going to feel more inclined to want to buy it as they will feel it is more ‘value for money’.

Codes and conventions Subsidiary images- subsidiary images are used which may also get you to look at the magazine, especially when well-known images are used. These images may be used as a backup if some of the others do not appeal to the audience.  Basic information- is is always needed on a magazine. This information usually consists of a bar code, issue date and price. Of the price is quite expensive compared to other magazines, it tends to be smaller. Whereas if the price is cheaper or on a special offer it is usually made made more visible so that people are more interested in buying it.  General layout- the general layout can be used to identify what genre of music the magazine mainly focuses on. For example, Q magazine has a very formal and simple front page as it is a general all round music genre magazine.
