Nature of research

Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody has thought. -ALBERT

Visualization Of “Research ” Research Library Internet Lab White rats

Basic objective for the lecture Important to have common understanding Brief about natural characteristics Method of problem solving with example

Nature of research ( Tuckman , 1978) Careful , systematic means of solving problem involve 5 characteristics: Systematic Logical Empirical Reductive Replicable

1. Systematic Identification of problem Labeling of variables and appropriate research design to find the relationships among variables Data collection according to variables Evaluation of problem and hypotheses

2. Logical Examination of the procedures used in the process must allows researcher to evaluate the conclusion drawn.

3. Empirical The researcher collect the data on which to base the decision.

4. Reductive The researcher takes individual data and uses them to establish general relationships.

5. Replicable Process is recorded, enabling others to test the findings To build future research on previous results.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS FOR STUDENTS

Importance of Critical Thinking Skill Development LESSON OUTLINE 01 What Is Critical Thinking 02 Characteristics of Critical Thinkers 03 04

Learning Outcomes The ability to define critical thinking Understanding characteristics of critical thinkers Applying skills to schoolwork and decision-making

What Is Critical Thinking? Critical thinking is the ability to analyze information objectively and make a judgment or decision. It is purposeful, logical, balanced, and considers all parts of the problem. Through critical thinking we achieve an in-depth understanding of the world by being engaged and curious when learning.

Opening Question If you could be the creator of any invention in history (but you don’t receive any money for it), what would it be and why? Type answer here

Recognizing Bias Striving for Understanding Characteristics of 01 Having an Open Mindset 02 Looking for Evidence and Reasoning 03 04 4 CRITICAL THINKERS

Having an Open Mindset An open mindset means being receptive to new ideas. It is an approach to learning new things, especially those that challenge our preconceived notions. Being open-minded is also being willing to admit we don’t know everything, but we can keep learning. 01

Looking for Evidence and Reasoning 02 Critical thinkers look at the bigger picture when trying to understand a concept. To do this, they must know how to find reliable and factual information. Comprehensive research techniques help us find relevant information, synthesize it, and make informed conclusions about a topic.

Recognizing Bias Students should understand that we bring our own prejudices and biases to every decision we make. It is important to be aware of them and how they influence us. We must not only recognize our own biases, but also that of the authors and creators of the information we consume. 03

Striving for Understanding Critical thinkers strive for in-depth and meaningful understanding. They gather and assess information that is supported by evidence or reasoned argument. The goal isn’t to find one correct answer, but to have comprehensive knowledge of a topic. 04

Having an Open Mindset Looking for Evidence and Reasoning Recognizing Bias Striving for Understanding Your Turn Which of the four characteristics do you think is the most important? Place the checkmark next to your answer.

Importance of Critical Thinking Increases confidence in our ability to analyze and evaluate information Helps us make informed decisions, problem solve, and cope with challenges Empowers us to trust the choices and decisions we make Aids us in adapting to changes more effectively and positively Challenges our own assumptions and the assumptions of those around us What would you add to this list? (Type your answer here).

Skill Development Critical thinking is a skill that we can continually develop by: Asking questions Examining the information we consume Actively listening Researching Developing media literacy skills Seeking diverse ideas

Asking Questions They can also increase our curiosity and desire to learn. We should be clear about the information we consume and understand its purpose and significance. Questions help us clarify what we are trying to understand.

Examining the Information We Consume The information presented influences our decisions and choices. We need to be critical when engaging with media. We should examine information by seeking multiple sources that can verify its accuracy. Students need to be aware that we are constantly subjected to media.

Actively Listening We tend to start formulating responses in our head while someone else is talking, thus missing out on understanding another person’s point of view and their reasoning behind it. When discussing a topic, be fully engaged and present.

Researching The more you research, the more knowledge you will possess to support your ideas and arguments. Engaging with what we learn will also help us comprehend and retain that information. Read, discuss, and observe information related to your topic.

Developing Media Literacy Skills This includes finding credible information and understanding the messages and viewpoints being presented. By evaluating the media we consume and create, we can develop a more comprehensive understanding of relevant and balanced information. Media literacy involves knowing how to navigate online environments.

Seeking Diverse Ideas This is often referred to as confirmation bias or living in an echo chamber. To have a balanced understanding of a topic, it is important to look at various perspectives and remain objective. We tend to pursue and trust the opinions and ideas that most align with our own.

LET’S APPLY OUR LEARNING

A. Thinking based on assumptions. B. Thinking outside the box. C. Using one source of information to reach a conclusion. D. The ability to analyze information objectively using reliable evidence. Drag and drop your answer here What is critical thinking? Multiple Choice Question

If you see a news story on social media, what can you do to determine if the information is credible? Question # 1 Open Response Write your response here.

What does it mean when the term “echo chamber” is used when referring to an online environment? Question # 2 Open Response Write your response here.

Ask Yourself Yes No Yes No 1. Do you question the authenticity of information you see on social media? (Place the checkmark next to your answer). 2. Have you ever shared a post or video that you found out later was misinformation? (Place the checkmark next to your answer).

Our assumptions, wishful thinking, and self-interests can be barriers to finding and understanding the information we consume. Remember, the goal is to broaden our knowledge and find meaning in what we learn. Final Thoughts Critical thinking can be beneficial to you in all aspects and at all stages of life.

Critical Thinking Grade 7 SKILLS FOR STUDENTS

Lesson Outline 01 What Is Critical Thinking 02 Critical Thinking Skills 03 Importance of Critical Thinking 04 Individual Project

Observation Interpretation Evaluation Inference 4 Critical Thinking Skills 01 02 03 04

Observation means paying close attention to what is around you and the information you are taking in. Notice what details stand out to you. Can you recognize any patterns or trends? Being observant helps students quickly identify problems and possible solutions. Observation 01

You can use a mindfulness technique in which you notice what you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch in the present moment. This will help students train their minds to take their time when processing information. observation skills How to Improve

Interpretation is understanding what the information is telling you. Ask yourself: Do you grasp the important points? Could you clearly explain it to someone else? If not, you may need to ask questions or complete more research. Interpretation 02

Read a story and explain the plot in a few sentences to someone. Is there a moral or lesson to be learned? You can also try teaching a skill to a classmate or friend. How would you explain it so that it makes sense to them? Interpretation skills How to Improve

Evaluation and analysis are important aspects of critical thinking. Not only do you need to understand the information, but you also need to identify what is important to solve the problem or make a decision. It is also the ability to ask relevant questions, gather facts from trustworthy sources, and assess your research. Evaluation 03

When we make a conclusion based on our collected evidence and research, we are making an inference. You may not have all the information you need, but it can help you narrow down your choices for a solution or decision. Your inferences will become more accurate with practice. Inference 04

Read a story and try to predict what will happen next as you go through the text. Write down or highlight the evidence or clues that you are basing your inferences on. Evaluate if your conclusions were correct or not. Inference skills How to Improve

Increases confidence in our ability to analyze and evaluate information Helps us make informed decisions, problem solve, and cope with challenges Empowers us to trust the choices and decisions we make Aids us in adapting to changes more effectively and positively Improves our ability to recognize facts, opinions, and misinformation importance of critical thinking

Review each of the four critical thinking skills and how to improve them. Choose one improvement method from the slides and complete the provided worksheet. Individual project
