Common types of medical negligence in neonatology Failure to provide timely or appropriate care:   Not acting quickly or correctly in emergencies, such as arranging for oxygen for a baby with breathing problems.  Improper treatment or procedure:   Performing procedures in a way that causes complications, such as a catheter causing a rupture in a vein.  Lack of post-operative care:   Failing to provide adequate follow-up care after a surgery or procedure, which can lead to complications.  Diagnostic failures:   Missing or delaying the diagnosis of serious conditions, such as Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) or epilepsy .  Failure to follow standard protocols:   Not adhering to established guidelines for care, such as those for managing seizures or for ROP screening.
