Media Representations COMD 203 Media Studies I

Representations as… Constructed ideas Repetition of certain images, groups, people, situations, or narratives ( re- presentation) Having impact on informal & social environment Political representatives (selected “stand-ins” for broader groups) Self-presentation (particularly in online platforms)

Stereotyping Applies to people, groups or identities (as opposed to situations ) Stereotypes do not describe actual people Usually negative, but not always Used for framing, categorization, evaluation Superficial feature(s) of the group exaggerated and generalized to each person within it —“Grain of truth” assumed to be central truth Seen as “cause” or “reason” for lower social status Emphasizes ingroup / outgroup ideologies

Archetypes Represents some kind of cultural or subcultural ideal Offer a pattern for the way a culture can be viewed Held up as role models (heroes) OR as examples of what not to be (villains) “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”--- but what if Superman had landed in Turkey?

Name that stereotype! What assumptions are incorporated into the James Bond character regarding: Men Spies The British Or Bond is as archetype ?

Name that stereotype! What assumptions are incorporated into the character Lois Griffin about Women Wives Americans Or is she an archetype ?

Name that stereotype! The Big Bang Theory ’s Sheldon Cooper & stereotypes of: Scientists & University professors How do expectations change for Amy Farrah Fowler, also a university scientist?

Gender representations http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/flowchart.jpeg Bechdel test: https://feministfrequency.com/video/the-bechdel-test-for-women-in-movies/

DETAIL – Love interests

Comedy & stereotyping Exaggeration for comic effect Audience pleasure & understanding Construction of stereotypical characters Awareness of comedic conventions Gayness on South Park : Mr. Garrison vs. Big Gay Al

Scripts Events & situations (as opposed to people and identities ) Shared expectations of What will happen in certain contexts How a situation will proceed Potential resolutions Draw on conventional behavior Dependent on gender, ethnicity, class, and other differences

Script: Boy meets girl Conventional expectations? Genre variations Cultural variations How will the narrative proceed? “Acceptable ” ending?

Negative / Positive ? Representation as a complex issue! Representations assume the power to define a diverse community What counts as a “positive” representation? Social effects of discrimination & misrepresentation Jack (Sean Hayes) on Will & Grace : “stereotypically” gay

Negative / Positive ? Burden of representation Relatively few opportunities for representation creates pressure for “respectable” types Risk of an overly narrow range of possibilities Serena Williams & her “infamous” temper: Her “burden” as a ( wildly successful) black woman in tennis

In-class activity: Identify another example of burden of representation . Think about how your selected community members feel the burden on them to construct respectable, reputable “types”.

Changing representations: A typical progression for a group

“Plastic Representation” Kristin Warner’s term for the superficiality of many supposedly “diverse” representational strategies Colorblind casting produces “normatively white” characters who happen to have racialized bodies Risk of treating diversity “as an artificial additive and not a substantive contribution” to media texts & industries Jay Z - Moonlight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCSh48OlvMo

“Plastic Representation” Strong representation requires more than putting minority bodies on screen: these texts must reflect their diverse experiences , too! “Resonant diversity” as the necessary solution / next step Crazy Rich Asians as an effort to go beyond plastic representation:

Accuracy & “realistic” representations Media contexts & conventions News vs. fiction Reflecting society vs. representing it Tone and audience Familiarity with conventions Hostile use vs. comic appropriation

Changing contexts Increasing diversity in media production & creation Social media Communities of minority / marginalized groups Immediate response to problematic representations On US television, Shonda Rhimes ’s hit shows—especially Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal— have included more complex representations of women and people of color.
