Communication Design Studio 1 – Spring 2019 13 feb 2019 – Wed – 10am to 5pm Session 1
What is important to you or the client? Realistically, only 2 out of 3 are actually possible, choosing between quality, speed and cost of a design.
What is a project? Time to deliver final deliverables (deadline) – May 2019 exams It does NOT matter if you OR the client is NOT satisfied with the QUALITY of design, it MUST be delivered on time. Cost (fixed vs variable) – fixed cost eg monthly office rent – variable cost is eg number of AC hours, or number of Coffee you drink or food you eat or internet mb you download from your phones monthly internet package. Team members (you vs a team vs external support or hired help) Materials used (time vs actual materials… tangible vs intangible eg electricity vs hardware vs paper etc ) Contracts – 1. Quotation (contract which contains estimated project cost and time of delivery and other technical details). Must include 50% advance payment clause plus TAXES if any especially for NEW clients. 2. designing and printing is done and delivered, now what document will the designer give the client for the balance remaining payment? = INVOICE . After sales service / tech support / changes / annual maintenance / copyright / non disclosure agreement / portfolio / experience letter / internship letter Moving on to the next project
Communication Design? What is it? Just design? Or something more than visual communication? Transfer of ideas, visually Design as a problem solving toolkit (through design research) Current design as it is practiced in the industry UX vs UI vs Design Research (HCD) vs Communication Design The expanding role and influence of Service Design / UX / Experiences The role of Art, Wonder and creativity in Communication Design How projects start and end and continue in professional communication design work… eg at Advertising agencies vs TV channels/production houses
