Introduction Gender inequality is a discrimination based on sex or gender that regularly prioritizes one gender over another. Engineering is the career that is heavily affected by the gender of all the professional STEM fields. This is an important discussion given the growing number of females in the engineering tertiary education. Given the concerning career growth of women compared to men the following are going to be discussed: The problems faced by women in production environment and their long lasting effects
Problems faced by women engineers Lack of motivation and support Perception of gendered ability Limited career growth Gender pay gap Perception about engineering being boy’s club
Lack of motivation and support Women are often offered insufficient mentorship , and given less technical responsibilities. They are often faced by un-nurturing environments given that engineering is male dominated.
Perception of gendered ability In production environments responsibilities are handed out according to the perceived gender abilities. For Example:
Limited career growth Women career growth is often hindered by: Lack of voice for selling oneself Not being able to ask for appraisal Limited promotion because engineering is male dominated Less women in managerial and leadership roles
Gender pay gap One of the largest concerns is the pay gap that has existed for ages which is sometimes caused by: Men being in higher positions compared to women. Responsibilities between the two genders. A perceived idea that a man is a provider.
Resulting effects Decades old wage gap Woman drop out Woman choose to stay in low level positions Mental health and anxiety
Gender Pay Gap
Women in engineering field compared to other careers
Female retainment in the Engineering field
Recommendations Support in the form of mentorship and networking. Women must be given equal responsibilities as men, specially technical responsibilities and professional training. Equal pay and opportunities for growth. Flexible working hours.
Conclusion There is visible improvement observed over the years of women pursuing the engineering profession, but the system must in nurturing of female professionals in order to retain them. Gender inequality is not a woman’s issue, it is a human issue it affects us all.
