peopleresidinginthenearbyarea.
❑Inotherword,itisapharmacysetupinacommunitytomeetthepublic
medicineandotherhealthcareneeds.
❑Includescorporatepharmacychaintopharmacydepartmentinsupermarket
andindependentlyownedpharmaceuticalshop.

responsibilityforpatient’smedicinerelatedneedsforaccesstohealthcare.
❑Theroleofthepharmacistsinthecommunity,andwithittheirmedicine
management,maychangeinthewakeoftherapidgrowthofdomesticmedicine
outputandnationalhealthcareexpenditure.
❑ThegenesisofcommunitypharmacypracticeinIndiacanbetracedbackto
BritishIndiawhenallopathicdrugswereintroducedandweremadeavailable
throughdrugstorestowardstheendofthenineteenthcentury.
❑Thepracticeofprescribinganddispensingwasnormallyafunctionperformed
bydoctors.Inaddition,mostdoctorstrainedtheirclinicassistantstodispense
medicinesandassistinthecompoundingofmedicinalpreparations.
❑Acommunitypharmacy,oftenreferredtoasretailpharmacyorretaildrug
outlets,isplaceswheremedicinesarestoredanddispensed,suppliedorsold.

pharmacistsorgraduatepharmacists.
❑Pharmacistsareregisteredundertheclause(i)andsection(ii)ofthePharmacy
Act1948,andtheirpresenceislegallyrequiredduringthedispensingandselling
ofmedicinesaccordingtoRule65(15)oftheDrugsandCosmeticsRules1945.

Legal requirements:
❑InordertoobtainaPharmacyLicense,apersonneedstobeaqualified
pharmacistwithadegreeofB.PharmorD.Pharm.
❑Grantedtopersonwhohavethepremiseforthebusinessandwhoengagethe
servicesofaqualifiedpersontosupervisethesaleofthedrugs.
❑Thelicensefortheretailsaleofdrugsotherthantheonesmentionedinthe
ScheduleC,C1andXareissuedinform20.
❑FordrugsspecifiedinScheduleCandC1inform21.
❑ScheduleXdrugsinform20F.
DocumentsRequiredforregistration:-
–Application form in the format prescribed in the Act.
–A cover letter with application duly signed with the details of name and designation of
the applicant.
–Challan of the fee deposited for registration.
–Blueprint of the premises.

–Proof of ownership of the premises.
–Proof of business constitution and registration.

–Affidavit of a registered pharmacist or a person equally competent who
will be working for full time.
–Appointment letter from a registered pharmacist or any competent person,
if employed.

General Licenses:-

Restricted Licenses:-
❖The license for restricted sale of
drugs other than those specified
in Schedule C,C1 and X are issued

equipped with adequate facility
❖Drug Purchase from duly
licensed dealer

Criteriaforstaffselection:
❑The qualification of the employee should not fall below the minimum
standard or else the reputation of the pharmacy may get compromised.
❑‘Over hiring’ i.e., superior people in inferior jobs, should be avoided as this
will lead to an adverse effect on staff morale and efficiency.
❑The details of job, its relation to other job, working hours, pay scale , etc.
❑Selection of personnel –tests, interviews , etc.
❑Orientation and training of staff.
