Compensating curves

Compensating Curve The anteroposterior curving (in the median plane) & the mediolateral curving (in the frontal plane) within the alignment of the occluding surfaces & incisal edges of artificial teeth that is used to develop balanced occlusion. ( GPT 8) The arc introduced in the construction of complete removable dental prostheses to compensate for the opening influences produced by the condylar & incisal guidance’s during lateral & protrusive mandibular excursive movements. ( GPT 8)

Determined by inclination of posterior teeth & their vertical relationship to occlusal plane. 3ypes of curves Anterio -posterior Compensating Curve Curve of Spee Medio -lateral Compensating Curve Curve of Monson Curve of Wilson Pleasure Curve/ Anti-Monson Curve Compensating Curve

Compensating Curve Definition: The anatomic curve established by the occlusal alignment of the teeth, as projected onto the median plane, beginning with the cusp tip of the mandibular canine & following the buccal cusp tips of the premolar & molar teeth, continuing through the anterior border of the mandibular ramus, ending with the anterior most portion of the mandibular condyle. ( Graf Spee, 1890) Curve of Spee

Posterior teeth separation when the curve of Spee not incorporated. Incorporating the Curve Spee will provide posterior tooth contact during protrusion. Compensating Curve Curve of Spee Significance: Runs from buccal cusp of mandibular posterior teeth starting from canine. When the patient moves his mandible forward, the posterior teeth set on this curve will continue to remain in contact. Thus, avoiding disocclusion .

Compensating Curve Definition: Curve of occlusion in which each cusp & incisal edge touches or conforms to a segment of the surface of a sphere 8 inches in diameter with its center in the region of the glabella. (George S. Monson, 1920) Curve of Monson Significance: Runs from palatal & buccal cusps of maxillary molars. Help in lateral balance of occlusion.

Compensating Curve Definition: The curve in the lower arch being concave & the one in the upper arch being convex. (George H. Wilson, 1911 ) Curve of Wilson Significance: It is followed when the 1st premolar are arranged to prevent their interference to lateral movements.

Compensating Curve Definition: A helicoid curve of occlusion that, when viewed in the frontal plane, conforms to a curve that is convex from the superior view, except for the last molars which reverse that pattern. (Pleasure MA, 1937) Curve of Pleasure/ Anti-Monson Curve Significance: In excessive wear of the teeth, the occlusal surfaces of the mandibular teeth slope facially instead of lingually & those of the maxillary teeth incline lingually .
