Saint Xavier University is a co-educational, private, Catholic
university. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy and chartered in
1847, Saint Xavier is one of the two oldest educational
institutions in Chicago, and one of the first institutions of
higher learning in Illinois. On May 1, 1992, Saint Xavier marked
another milestone in its long and impressive history when it
achieved University status.

GRADUATION REQUIREME NTS:
Bachelors Degrees: A minimum of 120 credit hours and a
minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00. Masters
Degrees: A minimum of 30 credit hours and a minimum
cumulative grade point average of 3.00.
GRADUATION HONORS:
To be eligible for graduation honors, students must have
completed at least fifty graded semester hours at Saint Xavier
University and earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50
for Cum Laude, 3.70 for Magna Cum Laude and 3.90 for
Summa Cum Laude. The cumulative GPA is based exclusively
on credits earned at Saint Xavier and is the higher of (a) the
GPA for all credits earned at Saint Xavier University, or (b) the
last fifty hours earned prior to graduation. If the student
reaches and exceeds fifty hours in a term, then all the courses
earned that term are counted in the GPA for the "last fifty
hours." The student is not allowed to pick the courses to equal
exactly fifty hours. Graduation honors are recognized for
undergraduate students only.
DEAN’S LIST:
To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have
completed a minimum of 15 semester hours of graded course
work at Saint Xavier University with a minimum cumulative
GPA of 3.75 and will not have received any grade of "I", "F", or
"D" during the most recent semester. Dean's list students shall
have been enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours of
graded course work during the most recent semester and have
received a minimum semester GPA of 3.75. Dean's List
participation is limited to undergraduate students.
ACADEMIC CALENDAR:
Saint Xavier University operates under a semester calendar, a
semester being 15 weeks in length. In addition, a ten week
summer session incorporating two 5-week terms is offered.
GRADING SYSTEM:
The grade point average for a semester is determined by
dividing the total number of grade points by the total number
of graded semester hours.

GOOD ACADEMIC STANDI NG:
To be in good academic standing, undergraduate students
must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of
2.0, and graduate students a minimum cumulative grade point
average of 3.0.
TRANSFER CREDIT:
Transfer credit is accepted in accordance with university policy
and may be used for graduation purposes. Transfer credit is not
computed into the Saint Xavier University cumulative grade
point average.
COURSE NUMBERING SYS TEM:
100 and 200 Level Courses - Lower level under-graduate
courses.
300 Level Courses - Upper level undergraduate courses.
Graduate students may not apply 300 level course credit
toward graduate degree requirements.
400 - 999 Level Courses - Graduate level courses.
Undergraduate students may enroll in graduate courses
only with the written permission of the Dean/Director of
the program in which the course is being offered.
REPEAT POLICY:
When a student repeats (at SXU) a course previously taken at
SXU, the highest grade received is used to calculate the
student's grade point average.
TRANSCRIPT FORMAT:
Saint Xavier University has two official transcript formats. For
all students enrolled prior to Fall 1980, transcripts are manually
produced on security paper. For students enrolled between Fall
1980 and Spring 1983 transcripts are either produced manually
or electronically generated on security paper. Transcripts for all
students enrolled Fall 1983 and thereafter are electronically
generated on security paper.
AMNESTY POLICY:
Saint Xavier University will allow students who have been
separated from the university for five or more years to re-enter
with a fresh start. Original courses and grades will remain on
the transcript, however grade points will not be calculated into
the cumulative grade point average. These courses will be
marked with an “F” to indicate forgiven.
