The presentation looks at the promotion of Agroforestry for production of wood and non-timber forest products in Katete district, Eastern province, Zambia. The goal is to increase production of wood and non- timber forest products on farm land thereby contributing to reduced deforestation and forest degradation, increased climate resilience and improved soil quality in rural areas of Zambia. The approach for increased adoption of agroforestry practices on smallholder farmland as a climate resilient production method is successfully implemented in Katete district and prepared for up-scaling at national level. the expected results include: strengthening the administrative and operational capacity of the training centre; promotion of agroforestry through the training centre; strengthening and training of extension services for agroforestry; and to develop a strategy to scale up the training centre approach to agroforestry dissemination. The target groups inlude frontline extension staff, selected lead farmers, traditional leaders and other service providers, primarily in Katete district, secondarily nationwide with a view to prepare upscaling to other smallholder farming areas. Other target groups will be other farmers and their producer groups/farmer cooperatives in and possibly around Katete district interested to adopt agroforestry practices. The short-term expert tasks include to: collect and review existing livestock agroforestry approaches; meet and visit (including field visits) key livestock and agroforestry stakeholders discussing how to intergrate livestock issues into the Katete promoting agroforestry project; carryout a training workshop for frontline extension staff on organic agriculture, agroforestry and training skills; analyze project intervention options and possible training approaches on - livestock nutrition (fodder grasses and fodder trees), fodder preservation, intergration of dung production and dung use for agroforestry production, grazing zones and protection of agroforestry plot (planting sites), village by-laws (community livestock agreements), other useful subject areas which can extend the agroforestry project approach; analyze the training capability of frontline extension staff to organize and train lead farmers and farmer groups; assess challenges, gaps and existing livestock management solutions in the district; carryout a livestock management concept worshop with all main stakeholders, presenting, discussing and harmonizing concrete livestock concept approaches to be integrated into the agroforestry promotion approach; document the workshop outcome and describe a feasible project approach for livestock management - including a cost estimation; give recommendation of next steps; propose concrete training material regarding livestock management; send concept draft document to stakeholders; incorporate the comments from stakeholders into a final version approach. This gives integrated livestock management approach

Concept for livestock-agroforestry integration in Katete Dr. Mwanza and Daniel Kalala Katete, May 2023
Livestock play an important role in the livelihood of farmers in Katete Most farmers are engaged in livestock-crop integrated practices Promotion of agroforestry necessitate a livestock-crop-agroforestry integration approach
Promotion of agroforestry is hampered by animal grazing and uncontrolled fires Limited land necessitates a balance between crop production and pasture/fodder production for livestock One-sided approach in promotion of agroforestry, crop or livestock production The problem
Benefits associated with livestock-crop-agroforestry integrated approach Reduction of risk in the advent of climate change – if the crop fails due to flood or drought, the farmer can still rely on his livestock. Source of additional income from sale of livestock. Provision of manure for crop and agroforestry production. Livestock provides the much-needed draught power for crop production agroforestry and crop residues can provide fodder for the livestock Agroforestry species, especially the leguminous ones, improve soil fertility through addition of organic matter and nitrogen fixation.
Livestock integration workshop with MOFL
Potential livestock-crop-agroforestry interventions Communal grazing e.g Rangeland establishment Individual pastures Fodder tree-crop integration Fodder banks at individual farmer level ( Mulberry,Lueceana,Sesbania,Moringa ) Integration of fast-growing green manures in crop fields( lablab, sunhemp ) Integration of fast-growing green manures in woodlots
