Contents Definition Advantages Flow chart for optimization Application Reference

The Term optimize is defined as “ to make perfect ” It is used in pharmacy relative to formulation and processing. Optimization : - It is defined as, choosing the best element form some set o f available alternative. In pharmacy, word “ optimization ’’ is found in the literature referring to any study of formula. Optimization is an act, process or methodology of making Design, system, or decision as fully perfect, functional. Optimization

Optimization of a product or process is the determination of experimental condition resulting in it’s optimal performance. For optimization of a formulation, the formulator has two types of p roblems constrained problem and unconstrained problem. Constrained problems are those which have some physical restrictions placed on them where as unconstrained are independent. E.g. Formulator has to make a hardest tablet possible. This is u nconstrained where as if it is being suggested that make hardest t ablet which should disintegrate in less 15 mins. The restriction is p laced and thus makes the problem more constrained type.

The development of a pharmaceutical formulation and their Process involves several variables. Mathematically, they can be divided into two groups. Independent variable and Dependent variable . Independent variables are those which are under the control o f the formulator and dependent variables are those which are the outcomes of the change in the independent variables. There is always a relationship between a given response ( Dependent variable ) and the independent variables is known Response surface . (Dependent variable surface).

Surface is to be evaluated to get the Independent variables X1 and X2, which give the response (Dependent) Variables Y1 . It is impossible to represent graphically, but mathematically it can be evaluated.

Advantage Helps to determine important variables. Helps to measures interactions. Yield the best solution with in the domain of study.

Application Formulation Development . Clinical chemistry . Medicinal chemistry. Study of pharmacokinetic parameters.

Conclusion Immense potential in development of pharmaceutical product and process . Less involvement of men, material, machine and money . Improvement in formulation characteristics.
