The Club Dumas, by Arturo Pérez Reverte, is about a devious and cunning book dealer, Lucas Corso.
Soon after meaning with Boris Balkan, another book dealer, to authenticate a draft of The Three
Musketeers, Corso is hired by Varo Borja. Borja, a rich man, who is a collector of many books, hires
him to authenticate a copy of Nine Doors of the Kingdom of Shadows, a book which supposedly
contains instructions for summoning the Devil. After the author was burned alive, there are only three

This technique primarily shown in the first portion of the book, told by Boris Balkan, who at the time
is appeared to be friendly with Corso, but reveals much about his personality via foreshadowing. On
page 6, Balkan is talking to Corso about the authenticity of the Dumas draft he brought in, when
Corso began to smile, In time, I found, he could also smile like a cruel, hungry wolf... (6). Later, while
talking about Corsos love for reading at a tender age, Balkan says Although it was highly unlikely that
Corso s childhood ever merited the term tender (9). Soon thereafter, Balkan was telling the reader how
Corso was described by a close friend, Precise, unscrupulous, and deadly as a black mamba (12).
Majority of the foreshadowing comes within the first couple dozen of pages, all mainly about how
Corso is a bad person in someway, which is best illustrated on 16, when Balkan states But the positive
feeling was quickly dispelled, as when you touch your pocket and realize that your wallet has just
been stolen (16). All of these foreshadows set up for an intriguing mystery, where Corso s fox like
