Catechism on Confirmation
Celebrating God’s gifts: The Sacraments
What is sacrament?
sacrament Efficient Signs of God’s Grace instituted by Christ for man’s sanctification and salvation.
From the Latin word Sacramentum which means “sacred or holy”. sacrament
Is a visible sign of an invisible reality. sacrament
Sacrament: sign They are signs because they are sensible symbols of God’s Grace.
The Seven Sacraments Baptism Confirmation The Holy Eucharist Reconciliation The Anointing of the Sick Matrimony Holy Orders
The most basic definition of sacrament is true about Jesus Christ. Through the Incarnation, God became human in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the first and most important physical embodiment of God and that is why He may also be called a sacrament of God.
We use the term primordial sacrament of God to describe Jesus Christ. Primordial here means “first and most important.”
Sacraments Saving Symbolic Acts or visible Signs Arising from the Ministry of Christ Continued in, by, and for the Church Which when received or celebrated in Faith Fashions us into likeness to Christ in His Paschal Mystery through the Power of the Holy Spirit
Confirmation The Sacrament that bestows on the person the grace to grow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit and strengthen us in the mission to follow Christ. The essential symbolic action in confirmation is the laying on of hands by the bishop and the anointing of the confirmand with chrism or holy oil. Confirmation means to confirm our Baptism.
“Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.” – ACTS 8:17 “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” –Catechism of the Catholic Church
C onfirmation It is the sacrament that confers the fullness of the Holy Spirit. It is also called Confirmation because it ratifies and strengthens the Baptismal Grace, making us mature Christians and Soldiers of Christ.
Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Confirmation on the evening of Easter Sunday, when he appeared in the Cenacle and said: “ As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” ( John 20-21-22)
In Confirmation, we receive the fullness of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, just as the apostles did on the day of Pentecost.
Confirmation: Sacrament of Christian Maturity Confirmation, along with Baptism and the Eucharist, is the sacrament that completes our incorporation into the Body of Christ, the Church.
Confirmation Comes from the Latin “ Confirmare ” which means “to make firm”.
We receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which empowers us to actively spread the faith, and thus, bring into fullness the grace that we receive in Baptism. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1285)

You ride on the wings of the wind.
You are wonderful Lord. The glory is yours. All of creation begins.
By your wisdom and might, dressed in majesty and right.
You ride … on the wings of the wind.
When I hear the rumble of your thunder,
when I see the lightning in the sky,
By the light of every star I see how wonderful you are.
All my life, I will sing your praise.
You ride on the wings of the wind.
You are wonderful Lord. The glory is yours. All of creation begins.
By your wisdom and might, dressed in majesty and right.
