Contemporary approaches to calligraphy design

yr 9 students are challenged to develop their own artwork using a contemporary approach to calligraphy styles

1. Yr 9 Term 1 Final Artwork Brief Design and produce a creative interpretation of your own name in Arabic calligraphy. This assignment asks you to step away from simply writing your name and instead asks you to begin to play with the elements of art to produce an interpretation of line and shape. note: you may include other words besides your name

2. Calligraphy options (select minimum five) Blending two colours together Variations of line (lines that go from thick to thin) Coloured background Dark background Harmonious colour scheme Complimentary colour scheme Warm and/or cool colours Variation of scale (some parts of the calligraphy are big, others are small) Calligraphy that fits into a shape Pictorial: making calligraphy into a picture Asymmetrical balance Symmetrical balance Overlapping words Space- positive and negative space Iconic Islamic shapes (like the star or arabesque) Radial Balance (lines radiating out from the middle) Spontaneous calligraphy lines (brush without pencil lines underneath) Kufic Calligraphy Organic shapes Geometric composition Overlapping text Thuluth (Ottoman calligraphy style) Muhaqqaq calligraphy style Circular Shapes Shadows and shading/exploring tone
