Conversion of Units of Measurement Mathematics 7 – Quarter 2
Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Explain the importance of converting units of measurement. 2. Convert units of length, mass, and capacity within the metric system. 3. Apply unit conversion in solving real-life word problems.
Review / Balik-Aral • How many centimeters are there in 2 meters? • 1 kilometer = ? meters • Quick recall: metric units (mm, cm, m, km, g, kg, L, mL)
Motivation Imagine: You have a ruler in centimeters but the length is given in meters. • How can you measure it correctly? Answer: We convert units of measurement.
Lesson Proper – Discussion Metric System: • Based on powers of 10. • Common units: – Length: mm, cm, m, km – Mass: g, kg – Capacity: mL, L Conversion rule: • Move decimal RIGHT → smaller unit. • Move decimal LEFT → larger unit.
Examples 1. 3 m = 300 cm 2. 1500 g = 1.5 kg 3. 2.5 L = 2500 mL
Guided Practice Convert the following: 1. 4 km = ? m 2. 250 cm = ? m 3. 3.5 kg = ? g
Independent Activity Solve on your own: 1. 1.2 m = ? cm 2. 6000 m = ? km 3. 7500 mL = ? L
Application A water container holds 5 liters of water. • How many milliliters of water is this? Solution: 5 × 1000 = 5000 mL
Generalization • Conversion of units helps us compare and understand measurements. • The metric system uses powers of 10 for easy conversion.
Evaluation / Short Quiz Convert the following: 1. 7 km = ? m 2. 0.45 m = ? cm 3. 2000 g = ? kg 4. 3.75 L = ? mL 5. 90 cm = ? m
Assignment Measure 5 items at home. • Write their measurement in one unit. • Convert each measurement into two other units.
