Hari Raya Haj i Presented by: Ayesha Siddiqah [5C] and Potula Lokesh [5E]

Introduction

Background Story The festival commemorates the story of the Islamic Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail, both of whom were said to had been guided by Allah to build the Kaaba: a square building made out of stone, with a white stone from heaven in one of its corners, in the centre of the Great Mosque in Mecca that is considered by Muslims to be their most holy site. It is in the direction of the Kaaba that all Muslims face during prayers. Another story which is actually the main reason that Hari Raya Haji is commemorated, is about the sacrifice that the islamic prophet Ibrahim was willing to make. According to the story found in the Quran, Allah one day commanded Ibrahim in his dream(which is how Allah communicates with his prophets) to sacrifice his son Ismail as a test of his obedience. Ibrahim went to his son, Ismail and told him about his dream. Ismail agreed to be sacrificed for Allah. Just as Ibrahim was about to carry out this command, Allah intervened to stop him and allowed for the sacrifice of a sheep from heaven in place of his son. Ibrahim’s exemplary act of sacrifice and obedience to Allah is commemorated during Hari Raya Haji through the ritual of korban , which involves the sacrificial offering of livestock to the poor and needy. Korban->

Who celebrates Hari Raya Haji? Muslims all over the world celebrate Hari Raya Haji. Hari Raya Haji is celebrated in many countries, one of which, is Singapore. Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Haji from wherever they are, as, to them, it does not matter where they celebrate Hari Raya Haji as long as they are able to celebrate their festival.

When is Hari Raya Haji celebrated? Hari Raya Haji which means “great day of the hajj” in Malay), also known as Aidiladha (alternatively spelt as Eid al-Adha or Eid Adha) or the Great Day of Sacrifice, is a Muslim festival that falls on the 10th day of Zulhijjah which is the 12th month in the Islamic calendar. It is one of the most significant days to the Islamic communities/Muslims.

Body

What do the people do to celebrate Hari Raya Haji? Prayer at Mosques On the day of the festival, Muslims first gather in mosques for congregational prayers[not compulsory]. After prayer they give respect to the elders and leave the mosque. They then go back home and decide where to carry out the Korban ritual. Qurban ritual The Qurban is one of the most significant rituals of Hari Raya Haji. The Qurban ritual is considered a sunnah muakkad (non-compulsory but strongly recommended obligation) and can be done individually or as a group. Muslims who can afford it are encouraged to perform the Qurban . The sacrifice ritual begins by facing the animal to be sacrificed in the direction of the Kaaba and uttering a prayer. The jugular vein at the animal’s throat is then slit quickly to ensure a quick death, usually within a minute. The animal is then cleaned and its meat carved up for distribution. As the Qurban signifies a sacrifice of anything valuable, livestock such as sheep, goats or cows are usually chosen as the offering. The person who sacrifices the animal keeps one third of the meat, while the remaining two thirds are shared with friends, neighbours and the poor and needy. In Singapore, the ritual takes place at mosques and religious schools. The korban may be performed by the donor or by appointed butchers at the respective slaughter sites.

What are the places the Muslims go when celebrating Hari Raya Haji? Each year, millions of Muslims go to Islam's most sacred mosque, Al-Masjid Al-Ḥarām to perform Hajj. By performing the Hajj, devotees show their commitment to God. If they are not in the same country as the mosque, Al-Masjid Al-Ḥarām, they will go to another mosque in the same country to perform the Muslim’s daily morning prayer, and the special prayers that are only done on Hari Raya Haji. They also go to sacred ground to slaughter livestock..

What are the traditions the Muslims observe? One of the main rituals of the festival is the Qurban, which involves the sacrificial slaughtering of livestock. It is one of two major Muslim festivals in Singapore that are celebrated as public holidays. Hari Raya Haji is celebrated to mark the Muslim pilgrimage known as the hajj.

What is the significance of Hari Raya Haji? Hari Raya Haji is an important festival where Muslims reflect on the story of God commanding Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Ismail. Thankfully, no small children came to harm as God intervened by allowing Ibrahim to sacrifice a sheep instead. Today the sacrificial ritual, known as Qurban, is an important part of the festival and represents Prophet Ibrahim’s faith and trust in God. Typically, mosques around Singapore pre-Covid take part in the ritual where an animal will be sacrificed during Qurban. The animal is then cleaned and the meat is carved up and distributed. Vegetarians should probably look away though… Just so you know, the animals are definitely not being tortured! In fact, their comfort and welfare are of utmost importance during the whole process. Islam’s slaughtering method ensures a quick and humane death to the animal.
