4 Stages of Helping/Counselling 1. Relationship : establishing an effective therapeutic relationship, based on PCT, conveying counsellor’s interest in and acceptance of the client as a unique and worthwhile person and builds sufficient trust for self-disclosure and self-revelation. For some just this helps, for others, more (techniques) is needed.
2. Assessment & Goal Setting : helping clients to explore themselves and their concerns, get a better picture of what is happening with the client. Gleaning information, issues identified and defined, developing outcome goals which are specific results the client would like to occur as a result of counseling. (Case history and testing)
3. Strategy Selection & Implementation : counselor’s task is to facilitate client understanding and related action, selecting and sequencing a plan of action/intervention strategies, based on assessment data.
4. Evaluation & Termination : Assessing the effectiveness of the interventions and the progress the client has made toward the desired goals. This helps to know, when to terminate, what action plans need revamping, what concrete progress has been made.
