COSTUMES OF MEGHALAYA

Megh – cloud, alaya- house. Situated north east part of India. Very beautiful state which has peaceful hills. Garos, khasi $ Jaintias –these are famous hill tribes of India. People of Meghalaya are known for their weaving skills. Meghalaya

The most skilled weavers of the region. Almost every family earn their live hood through weaving. GAROS

Costumes of Garos

Traditional Womens wear. Made with mulbery silk. Unstitched garment. Woven fabric. Wrapped around to cover the body. JAINSEN

Made with endi silk threads. Sonidan is the hub of “endi” in meghalaya. Produced with natural soothing shade creame, white, brown, beige and gold. Favorites of any fashion addict of india. Endi shawl

Endi shawl

Short piece of cloth “Eking”. Women drape it round the waist in remote areas of garo hill village. While men wear a “loincloth”. “Eking” $ “loincloth ”

Unstitched cloth. Hand woven. Has 6 to 10” wide beautiful border with diff. pattern $ motifs. In crowded area garos women wear it with blouse . Dakmanda

Costume of khasi

Used by khasi women. Made with cotton. Woven fabric. Upper part of her body is clad in a blouse. Over these she ties both of ends of a check cloth on one shoulder. Jainsem

Traditional former wear of women. Made with munga silk. Long piece of fabric. Hangs below the knees. Knotted or printed at the shoulder. Jympien

Used by maidens and women. Check print cloth. Tied round the head during harvesting. Kyrshah

For formal occasion. Long velvet blouse. From shoulder to the ankles with the skirt. Wrapped round the waist. Thoh khyrwang

Women tribes embellish themselves with the:- Earrings Other ornament of pure silver $ gold. Silver circlet round the head for a fore head decoration. Ornaments

String of thick red coral beads. Wears during festive occasion. Over round neck. palia

Wear by garos ladies. Which are thin fluted stems of glass strung by fine threads. Rigitok

Red ,orange, white ,blue , creame $ black are mostly used. colors
