COT No. 1 Separating Mixtures: Filtration

A. Reviewing previous lesson Identify the separating technique shown by each picture. Hand Picking Winnowing Sieving Magnetism Decantation

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson ( Vocabulary Enrichment ). Identify the word by supplying the missing letters based on the given definition. F_ ltr_ti_n - is a technique for separating insoluble solid from a liquid. F_lt_r Pap_r - is used to separate the suspended particles from the liquid. Res_du _ - is the solid particles that are left behind during the filtration process. F_ltrat _ - is the liquid that passes through the filter paper. Filtration Filter Paper Residue Filtrate

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson 1. Using the following materials such as small jar , soil and water, ask a pupil to make muddy water mixture. 2. Let the pupils describe the mixture.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1 ( Differentiated Instruction ) After the soil and water are mixed together, can you still separate the components of the mixture? Conducting a simple activity to discover that the components of mixture can still be separated using the technique that will be applied. Presentation of the materials for the activity. Presentation of the Rubric to be used in assessing the conduct of the group activity.

Rubric in Assessing Group Performance in Simple Science Activity (Self-Assessment) Direction : Assess your group performance in accomplishing the task provided. Encircle the corresponding rating .

Group Presentation/ Reporting on how filtration technique is used in separating the components of mixture.

Concept Developed A mixture of liquid and tiny particles of solid which have not been dissolved can be separated through filtration . A filter paper is used to separate the suspended particles from the liquid. It has tiny pores that allow the liquid part of the mixture to pass through it. The solid particles that are left behind are called residue , while the liquid that passes through the filter paper is called filtrate.

Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living ( HOTS ) H ow does the filtration technique help to make water becomes safer to drink?

Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson Give some benefits of using filtration technique in separating components of mixtures.

Evaluating Learning Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is wrong. (1-5) 1. Filtration technique is used to separate solid and other impurities from liquid. 2. In a filtration technique, the solid components or residue remain in the set-up as the liquid or filtrate is being filtered. 3. Unwanted components in water such as impurities can be separated using hand picking or manual separation technique. 4. Water refilling stations use filtration technique to produce bottled mineral water. 5. Nowadays, it is still safe to drink water directly from deep well ( poso ) or from a well ( talaga ).
