Collection Techniques

Oropharyngeal Swabbing Ask the patient to open the Oral cavity as much as possible . First examine Patient Oral Cavity & If Patient Oral Pallet or Oropharynx can not be seen ask him to Stick out the tongue. If patient mouth full of betel nut ask him to wash his mouth thoroughly before collection . In case of unfavorable oral cavity conformation, a Tongue Depressor can be used for better exposure specially for Pediatric patient . While inserting the swab stick, avoid contact with the tongue, teeth, cheeks or side palate . After reaching the Oropharynx , Rub the swab on the Posterior wall means Oral palate for 5-10 seconds . Try to avoid touching the Epiglottis for prevent gagging.

Nasopharyngeal Swabbing Make sure that the patient is seated comfortably and sit at back straight fully , with the head tilted slightly backward as much as possible . Before inserting the stick Check the nasal nostrils use of examination light if there any N asal polyp or Obstruction. Gently insert the swab into the nostril about 2-3 cm depth for adult and 1 cm for pediatric patient, Lying down to the wall of nasal floor. In this way, the swab is expected to the between the septum and the inferior turbinate, as far as the nasopharynx . In case of resistance during the passage, try to Slightly correct the direction of the swab without forcing its pass. Once the nasopharyngeal posterior wall is reached, gently rotate the swab for 5 to 10  seconds to ensure optimal absorption of pharyngeal secretions. Finally , withdraw the swab upward direction and make sure not to touch the stick touching olfactory cleft.

Storage Refrigerator : Put the VTM Vial along with zipper bag in Vertical Position Cold Box : Put the sample vertically and Exactly middle in the position of Cold Box without touching the surface of ice pack . Check temperature logger Device at 2-8 degree Celsius before sending the sample via Cold box or storage in Refrigerator, .

What to Cross Check? Check given ID number same as IEDCR form, Register or Lab Log form Labeled in VTM Disposable Sampler Vial - Make sure Screw Lid of the Vial and Zip Lock Bag Closed Tightly. - Always check VTM Expiration and Color of Vial Solution Before Collection. Some Important Notes After Nasophayrygeal sample collection if patient nostrils starts bleeding just Tilt backward head of the patient and advise to take rest for 5-10 mins . After 5-10 mins if patient nostrils not became stop bleeding give nasal Peg & Immediately refer him for clinical management. - Collect only Nasopharygeal Swab from Death Patient.
