5 FAD ART Understanding the significance of the subject matter and theme enables the audience to delve into the artist’s life and guides them in comprehending the message conveyed by a particular artwork. Subject matter and theme help the audience to understand the artist’s perspective and provide insights into the historical periods that have influenced the art. Furthermore, they expose the audience to various characteristics of art across different eras.
The subject in art refers to its content or what it portrays. It can be either figurative, depicting recognizable objects or scenes, or nonfigurative, focusing on texture, color, composition, shape, or movement. On the other hand, the theme of an artwork is the underlying idea or concept that connects the subjects to their context. It provides a more profound meaning or message to the artwork. Themes can be identified through the following: title artist medium dimension year it was made Subject vs. Theme 6
Subject matter answers, “What do we see, hear, smell, taste, or touch?” Identifying the subject requires a combination of senses and keen and diligent observation. It is not just about the image but how it is presented and how the elements are deployed. The theme, on the other hand, goes beyond the literal. It is the data on the artwork and what we see at the surface level with our senses. Subject vs. Theme 7
With its distinct form, medium, technique, and expressive elements, the Rizal Monument prominently showcases its subject matter: Jose Rizal , our esteemed national hero. Its features immediately highlight the underlying themes of national identity and heroism. For example: 8 Rizal Monument (1908)
The Rizal Monument is the outcome of a national competition initiated in 1905. The top prize was initially awarded to Carlos Nicoli , an Italian artist. However, due to certain constraints, the commission was ultimately given to the runner-up, Richard Kissling , a Swiss artist. Rizal Monument 9 Richard Kissling
The Rizal Monument portrays its subject as a standing figure holding a book, possibly symbolizing the significance of education. Interpretations on heroism and national identity can vary greatly, especially in a diverse cultural context where multiple perspectives coexist. Rather than relying on a single description, we need to take responsibility and conduct thorough research to gain a deeper understanding of our community. Rizal Monument on Heroism and Identity 10
