New Journalism It is a movement of news reporting that became popular to the US in the 1960s onward. Its popularity lead to what we now call creative nonfiction.

The writers of those newspapers and magazines are the American journalists-turned-literary figures (or vice versa) like Truman Capote, Hunter Thompson, Joan Didion , and Gay Talese . “It was news writing that broke free from the constraints of the inverted triangle .”

TECHNIQUES OF LITERARY REPORTAGE

TOM WOLFE “He is an American author and journalist widely known for his association with  New Journalism , a style of news writing and journalism developed in the 1960s and 1970s that incorporated literary techniques .”

Tom Wolfe and E.W. Johnson anthologized several of these hallmark works from different news and lifestyle outlets in the book, The New Journalism. There are four basic techniques.

Scene-by-scene Construction B uilding blocks are verifiable facts (who, what, when, where, how and why) Emphasis on Dialogue Articles may feature direct quotes offered by interviewees or culled speeches or officially released statements.

Fluid Point of View Claims to see things through the eyes of an important figure in the scene. Often voicing out what that figure may be thinking. I nterpretation of Details Do not speculate on the significance of certain object details, rather; Interpreting details as a symbol of something.
