Critical appraisal The process of carefully and systematically analyzing a research paper to judge its trustworthiness, its value, and relevance in a particular context.

When to carry out? • Conducting literature reviews for research proposals or projects. • Reviewing a journal article • Evaluating the effectiveness, costs, and benefits of health programs, Interventions etc. • Establishing new health care programs • When implementing health policies • Before public health decision-making

Critical appraisal of different parts of an article

Research question 1.What is the purpose of the research? 2.What tone is the paper taking? 3.What research methods were used?

Abstract ▪ Are your issues discussed there? ▪ What are the main findings of the research? ▪ Do you want to know more after reading the abstract? ▪ Does it address a related question?

Introduction and Discussion • The introduction and discussion sections will help you to identify the key concepts, research gap, goals, subjects, and themes of the research. • At the end rationale is given?

Methodology ▪ The Methodology will give you a step-by-step description of exactly how the study was carried out . ▪ Where the study was done? ▪ From whom the data was collected? ▪ Is it primary or secondary data? ▪ And how the data was collected?

▪ How good is the data? ▪ Are the statistical methods appropriate? ▪ Is the sample large enough to produce significant results?

Results • Are the results aligned with the methods and objective? • Are the results leading to answer the research question?

Discussion • The discussion section is more detailed and precise than the abstract. • Will explain the limitations of the research and possible conclusions which are not mentioned in the abstract.
