CRYSTALLIZATION INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL PROCESS 1

CRYSTALLIZATION Crystallization is the (natural or artificial) process by which a solid forms, where the atoms or molecules are highly organized into a structure known as a crystal. Some of the ways by which crystals form are precipitating from a solution, freezing, or more rarely deposition directly from a gas. Attributes of the resulting crystal depend largely on factors such as temperature, air pressure, and in the case of liquid crystals, time of fluid evaporation. 2

Contd ,.. Crystallization is an operation in which solid particles are formed from a liquid solution. It is a solid liquid operation used to seperates solutes from solution in the form of crystals. In this operation mass tranferred from the liquid phase to the solid phase/the crystal surface 3

CLASSIFICATION OF CRYSTALLIZER It is based on the mode of operation Batch crystallizer: stir tank crystallizer Continuous crystallizer : swenson walker crystallizer 4

Swenson-walker crystallizer 5

INTRODUCTION Swenson-walker crystallizer is a continuous type crystallizer. This operation involves both heat and mass transfer. Crystallization is the formation of solid particles with in homogeneous phase. In the formation of crystals two steps are required. Nucleation(birth of new solute particle) crystal growth(growth of the nucleus to microscopic size ) 6

PRINCIPLE It works on the principle based on super saturation by cooling. 7

CONSTRUCTION 8

OPERATION 9

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Less floor space is required Saving labor cost Continuous process Crystal of uniform size, free from inclusions Scrapper may break crystal to the little extent due to the agitation 10
