INTRODUCTION [email protected] Neck, in land vertebrates, the portion of the body joining the head to the shoulders and chest. Some important structures contained in or passing through the neck include the seven cervical vertebrae and enclosed spinal cord, the jugular veins and carotid arteries, part of the esophagus, the larynx and vocal cords, and the sternocleidomastoid and hyoid muscles in front and the trapezius and other nuchal muscles behind. Among the primates, humans are characterized by having a relatively long neck.

COMPARTMENTS [email protected] Vertebral (1) Visceral (1) Vascular compartments (2)

TRIANGLES [email protected] Anterior: Submandibular Submental Muscular Carotid triangles Posterior:  Occipital Omoclavicular

MUSCLES [email protected] Suprahyoid:  Stylohyoid Digastric Mylohyoid Geniohyoid muscles Infrahyoid :  Omohyoid Sternothyroid Thyrohyoid , Sternothyroid muscles

LARYNX [email protected] 9 cartilages:  Thyroid (1) Epiglottic (1) Cricoid (1) Arytenoid (2) Corniculate (2) Cuneiform (2) cartilages

THYROID GLAND [email protected] Consists of left and right lobes connected by a central isthmus, produces thyroxine and triiodothyronine.

HYOID BONE [email protected] Consists of a central body with paired greater and lessor horns.

NECK SPACES [email protected] The content of the neck is grouped into 4 neck spaces, called the compartments . Vertebral compartment : contains cervical vertebrae and postural muscles. Visceral compartment : contains glands (thyroid, parathyroid, and thymus), the larynx, pharynx and trachea.

CONTINUE [email protected] Two vascular compartments: contain the common carotid artery, internal jugular vein and the vagus nerve, on each side of the neck. Protection of the parts of the neck and its mobility are ensured by the vertebrae and muscles of the neck.
