Nursing intervention Explain the procedure and purpose to the patient and to the relatives. Tell to relax and not to move during the procedure to prevent distortion of films, reassure the patient that procedure is painless. Explain about cost. Ensure the patient is fasting and is not allergic to dye in case a contrast medium is to be used. Hair to be clean and free of hair pins. Jewelry, eye glasses,denatures,and metal objects from head and neck should be removed prior to CT scan.
Continue…. Obtain a written consent from patient or relatives. Explain about diet; unless contrast medium is to be administered, there is usually no dietary restriction before procedure. If contrast medium is given ,nil by mouth for 4hours,intravenous line should be open for contrast injection. For children and restless patient, sedation may be given as per order. For some children or adults who are not co-operative or having involuntary movements CT scan may be done under general anesthesia. Arrange emergency medications and articles ready.
Continue…. Assist the administration of dye. Check for allergic reaction before contract medium is administered. Send patient to CT scan room after recording in chart.
Post CT Check for complication and patient condition.eg; nausea and vomiting. Patient who is received from contrast medium should be observed for signs and symptoms of delayed reactions to the contrast (eg; skin rashes,itching,nausea,headache,swelling face,breathelessness) If symptoms are severe antihistamine and hydrocortisone may be given as per hospital policy.( usually avail 1-2ml and hydrocortisone100 mg iv should be given.) Patient should be hydrated to clear contrast from the body faster. Patient who has CT general anesthesia is kept on iv fluids and nothing per mouth for few hours.
