Use of NaBH 3 CN in Organic Synthesis ( Hydride ion transfer Reductions-III) Useful Concept to II M.Sc O rganic Chemistry, Semester-IV III BSc - IIT-JAM & CU-CET CSIR-NET/GATE exam students
Out lines of the Topic Sodium cyanoborohydride Introduction Preparation Applications Assignment
Introduction Sodium borohydride structure sodium cyanoborohydride is a colourless salt its chemical formula is Na B H 3 CN .
Sodium cyanoborohydride preparation NaBH 3 CN is less reactive reducing agent than sodium borohydride due to the presence of electron withdrawing cyano group. Preparation :Reaction of NaBH 4 with HCN gives NaBH 3 CN. It is soluble in THF, MeOH, H 2 O, HMPA and DMF solvents. NaBH 3 CN cannot reduce the aldehydes (or ) ketones in neutral condition but it reduces the protonated aldehydes and ketones at around pH 3 .
