Malware
How Malware Harms:
Malware can steal your login credentials,
credit card information, or other sensitive data and make
transactions with your bank details.

Phising
How Phising Harms:
Stolen personal information like your name, Social Security
number, or birthdate can be used to open new accounts in
your name, take out loans, or even file fraudulent tax
returns. This can damage your credit score and take a long
time to rectify.

Identity Theft
How Identity Theft Harms:
If your identity is stolen and used for professional purposes,
like creating fake online profiles or sending malicious emails
from your work address, it can damage your professional
reputation and lead to disciplinary action or even
termination from your job.

Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying can happen anywhere online, including
social media platforms, messaging apps, and gaming
communities.
It can involve a variety of tactics, such as:
Sending mean or hurtful messages
Spreading rumors or lies online
Posting embarrassing photos or videos of someone
without their consent
Excluding someone from online groups or activities
Impersonating someone online to make them look bad

Cyber stalking
The Mechanics of Cyberstalking:
Cyberstalkers can use various online methods to target their victims,
such as:
Monitoring online activity: This could involve keeping tabs
on someone's social media profiles, emails, or even browsing history.
Sending unwanted messages: This can include harassing emails, texts, or messages on social media
platforms.

Hacking
Phishing Attacks: Hackers might send deceptive emails,
texts,or even voice messages pretending to be from a
legitimate source (bank, credit card company, etc.).
These messages often create a sense of urgency and trick you into revealing your OTP.
Vishing: Similar to phishing, but hackers use voice calls to pressure you into revealing your
OTP.

Tips for
Staying Safe
Online

Strong Passwords: These are complex passwords that are difficult to guess. They
should be at least 12 characters long and include a mix of uppercase and lowercase
letters, numbers, and symbols.
Avoid Reuse: Don't use the same password for multiple accounts. If one account gets
compromised, hackers might try using that password to access your other accounts.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a
second verification step, like a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
1. Use Strong and Unique Passwords:

Suspicious Links & Attachments: Phishing emails, texts, or social media messages often
contain links or attachments that, when clicked, can download malware, steal your
information, or redirect you to fake websites designed to look legitimate.
Urgency & Unknown Senders: Phishing messages often try to create a sense of urgency
or panic to pressure you into acting quickly without thinking critically. Be wary of
messages from unknown senders, especially those requesting personal information or
immediate action.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
2. Beware of Phishing

Security Patches: Software companies regularly release updates that fix security
vulnerabilities in their products. These updates are crucial for protecting your devices
from hackers who exploit these vulnerabilities to gain access.
Operating System, Browser & More: Update your operating system (Windows, Mac,
Android, etc.), web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.), and other software
applications as soon as updates become available.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
3. Keep Software Updated

Public Wi-Fi Risks: Public Wi-Fi networks are not always secure. Hackers can potentially
eavesdrop on your traffic and steal your data if you're not careful.
Limit Sensitive Activities: Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities like online
banking, entering credit card information, or accessing important accounts
.
VPN (Virtual Private Network): If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a VPN. A
VPN encrypts your internet traffic, making it more difficult for hackers to steal
your data . Using VPNs like NordVPN , you can protect yourself from hackers.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
4. Secure Your Wi-Fi

Trusted Sources: Only download software, games, or files from trusted sources like
official app stores or websites of reputable companies.
Free Downloads & Malware: Free software downloads can sometimes be bundled with
malware. Be cautious and do your research before downloading anything, especially if it
seems too good to be true.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
5. Be Wary of Downloads

Oversharing: Sharing too much personal information online can make you a target for
scams or identity theft. Be mindful of what you post and who you share it with.
Stranger Danger Applies Online Too: Don't automatically accept friend requests or follow
people you don't know in real life. Be cautious about interacting with strangers online.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
6. Social Media Savvy

Ransomware Attacks: Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts your files and demands
a ransom payment to decrypt them. Regularly backing up your data ensures you have a copy
of your important files in case of a ransomware attack or accidental data loss.
External Hard Drive or Cloud Storage: Back up your data to an external hard drive or cloud
storage service. This way, you can recover your files if something happens to your computer.
Tips for Staying Safe Online
7. Back Up Your Data

Tips for Staying Safe Online
First Line of Defense: A good antivirus and anti-malware program can help protect your
devices from malware like viruses, worms, spyware, and ransomware.
Regular Scans: Regularly scan your devices for malware to detect and remove any threats.
8. Antivirus & Anti-Malware

Tips for Staying Safe Online
Help Others Stay Safe: If you encounter a phishing attempt,
report it to the cyber cell. This helps to track and take down
malicious actors who are sending phishing emails or creating fake websites.
Report Buttons & Phishing Websites: Many email providers have buttons to report phishing
attempts. You can also report phishing websites to organizations that track online threats.
9.Report Phishing Attempts

Contacting the Lucknow
Cyber Cell:
There are three ways to report a cybercrime to the Lucknow Cyber Cell,
depending on your comfort level with disclosing your identity:
In-Person: Visit the Cyber Cell Headquarters located at Hazratganj,
Lucknow.
Phone: Call the Cyber Cell helpline number: 1930 (This number is
specifically for cybercrime complaints in Uttar Pradesh).
Online: Visit the official website of the Uttar Pradesh Police and file a
complaint online. You can choose to file the complaint anonymously on
the website.
