12. TECH SUPPORT SCAMS A tech support call you don't expect is a scam —even if the number is local or looks legitimate. These scammers use fake caller ID information to look like local businesses or trusted companies. If you get a pop-up message to call tech support, ignore it.

13. PHISHING Phishing is when attackers attempt to trick users into doing 'the wrong thing', such as clicking a bad link that will download malware, or direct them to a dodgy website .  

14. EMERGENCY SCAMS In an emergency scam, fraudsters pose as family members or friends. They'll call or send messages saying they're in an emergency and need you to wire money immediately. Often, fraudsters target grandparents and pretend to be their grandchild in trouble.

15. ADVANCE FEE SCAMS Advance fee frauds ask investors to pay a fee up front – in advance of receiving any proceeds, money, stock, or warrants – in order for the deal to go through. The advance payment may be described as a fee, tax, commission, or incidental expense that will be theft later .  

16. COUNTERFEIT CASHIER'S CHECKS A fake cashier's check is sent, which the scammer asks the recipient to cash and then wire back the funds to cover the taxes and fees. Scammers might go to an online auction or classified listing site and offer to buy an item for sale, pay for a service in advance, or rent an apartment.
