INTRODUCTION TO CYBER SECURITY Linguistic definition: From a linguistic perspective, cybersecurity is a compound noun formed from: Cyber-: It comes from the word cybernetics (Greek kybernētēs = “steersman, governor, pilot”), coined in 1948 by Norbert Wiener to describe control and communication in machines and living beings. Security: Security: from Latin securitas (safety, freedom from danger).

Technical definition: Cybersecurity is the combination of methods, processes, tools, and behaviors that protect computer systems, networks, and data from cyberattacks and unauthorized access

WHY CYBER SECURITY MATTERS Cybersecurity aims to prevent both human and commercial losses. By 2025, cybercrime is expected to cause $1.2–$1.5 trillion in global damages. One major case is the North Korean Lazarus Group, which stole $1.5 billion from Bybit, the largest crypto heist of the year. But cyberattacks don’t just hurt finances—they can also cost lives. Between 2016 and 2021, ransomware is estimated to have caused 42–67 patient deaths, showing that cybersecurity protects not only money but also people.

The Threats We Face Malware: – malicious software like viruses, worms, and trojans that damage or steal data. Ransomware: – locks or encrypts files and demands payment to unlock them. Phishing Attacks: – fake emails, texts, or websites tricking people into giving passwords or credit card info. DoS/DDoS Attacks: – flooding a system or website to make it crash. Data Breaches: – unauthorized access to sensitive data (like customer info or medical records) Insider Threats: – employees or partners misusing access to harm the organization

How Cybersecurity Protects Us Cybersecurity protects us by blocking attacks and keeping data safe. Firewalls, antivirus, and encryption stop hackers from stealing information, while strong passwords and multi-factor authentication secure accounts. Being alert to phishing attempts reduces human error, and regular backups ensure data can be recovered after an attack. Keep Software Updated: – Updates fix security flaws, so always update your system, apps, and antivirus.
