What is Psychology ? The word psychology basically come from the two Greek words PSYCHE which means soul or mind and LOGOS which means to study , literally psychology means the study of the soul or mind .

In present times, psychology is defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. There are three important aspects given in the definition namely: Science, behavior and mental processes.

Different methods of Psychology 1.Inspection method psychologist obtain data from the subject or participant’s feelings and experiences. Data are then analyzed and interpreted. 2. Observation method This is both visual and oral. P sychologists applying this method examine the subject in the laboratory, classroom or institution. He records his observations and later analyzes them

3. Experimental method This is testing a theory by accurate trial of controlled situation. 4. Survey method Utilizes questionnaire to obtain data from a large group of sample. 5. Empirical method Obtaining data by way of direct or indirect experience.

6. General psychology Concerns the basic principle of human behavior. It attempts to explain the why and how people behave in a way under certain situation 7. Clinical psychology This is also called Counseling Psychology. It deals with a scientific solution to a psychological problem.

8. Abnormal psychology deals with abnormalities, it includes determining of the person who has abnormalities. 9. Evolutionary psychology Focuses on psychological stimuli in human being. It is about the ability in acquiring linguistic skills, person’s state of mind. 10. Cognitive psychology Deals with capability to solve problem, which also includes process like thinking, analyzing, memorizing and many more .

11. Legal psychology Deals with handling psychological issues 12. Educational psychology Branch of psychology taught in colleges. Deals with usual student problems like learning disorders, sex education, problem on adolescence particularly shyness and many more. 13. D evelopmental psychology Deals primarily with human growth and changes 14. Personality psychology Deals with personality as determined using I.Q. Psychologies applies I.Q. test to gauge understanding. Commonly used in interviews to test a performance.

The science of psychology benefits society and enhances our lives. Psychologists examine the relationships between brain function and behavior, and the environment and behavior, applying what they learn to illuminate our understanding and improve the world around us.

Psychologist conduct basic and applied research, serve as consultants to communities and organizations, diagnose and treat people, and teach future psychologist and those who will pursue other disciplines. They test intelligence and personality.

Many psychologist work as health care providers. They assess behavioral and mental function and well being. Other psychologists study how human beings relate to each other and to machines, and work to improve these relationships.

The application of psychological research can decrease the economic burden of disease on government and society as people learn how to make choices that improve their health and well being .The strides made in educational assessments are helping students with learning disabilities.

Psychological science educators understand how children think, process and remember-helping to design effective teaching methods. Psychological science contributes to justice by helping the courts understand the minds of criminals, evidence and the limits of certain types of evidence or testimony.
