Presentation on DO DEADLINES DESTROY CREATIVITY ? PRESENTED BY SHERAZ AHEMD & ALI MUHAMMAD Approved by Teacher: SYED MUHAMMAD ANZAR ALAM

Yes- Deadlines destroy creativity: Deadlines will force us to focus on finishing the task at hand rather than coming up with creative ideas. Continuously chasing deadlines can make us emotionally exhausted. Hence there will be no motivation to be creative. Even if we get creative ideas, implementing them requires more time and analysis. With a short deadline, that will be difficult and hence people will go for routine and already worked out idea. Everyone is different. Some people can be creative under pressure, and some people will bring innovation ideas, only if they are not under pressure. So, giving tight deadlines to those, who cannot cope up with pressure can destroy creativity.

Short deadlines KILL creativity :   Frankly, rushing the creative process is a waste of time Here is why; if you allocate a very short period of time for generating ideas, after which you rush into implementation, you will end up implementing obvious, boring ideas.  Giving people too strict of a deadline will keep them from finding these unusual ideas. Well… because these first ‘logical’ ideas are not good enough. Pursuing these sub-par ideas will not lead to your much-desired progress.

Creativity is not just about doing things beautifully, but also about finding new ways to doing things. Deadlines change the whole scenario of any project, it will force you into creating the fastest way of getting the job done. But, the closer a deadline is, the less open we are to outside ideas. When you don't explore every idea, you are missing out on a lot of different ways to get the job done. So creativity is partly surviving in the art of chasing deadlines, but can only be fully explored when the environment provides the freedom to make mistakes. So should we then clear schedules for days or weeks, for the mere purpose of generating ideas? Absolutely not. While too little thinking time inhibits creativity, too much time is equally harmful.

No- Deadlines motivate us to be creative: If there are no deadlines, people may keep postponing the task is search of better creative idea. If we get used to being creative, we will be creative even if we have deadlines. Thinking and implementing creative ideas can become a habit. With no deadlines, we will have plenty of time, so we may also think about why the idea was not work, the possibility of failure. This can indeed kill creativity.

Short deadlines STIMULATE creativity I can give you a few tips that worked for me in achieving the deadlines. Make Them Urgent . It's easy to  put  off a task when you have all the time in the world to complete it (i.e., a  deadline  of two months from now isn't a helpful goal). Make Them Personal. Everyone thinks differently. Make Them Actionable. Make Them Meaningful. Learn from mistakes:  If you bust a deadline, take a few minutes to analyze what went wrong and how you can avoid that in the future.

• Dividing the task into sub-tasks and keeping small deadlines will reduce the pressure and can give us peace to think about innovative ideas. If we delay the work until the last minute, we cannot think about new ideas. • Setting some time on one side to think about creative ideas also helps. How to be creative under pressure:

• Eliminating distractions will give us more time to finish the task, and thereby we can use that time to try and implement new ideas. • Mistakes do happen if we try something new. So, not being scared of failing and making mistakes can help us in being creative. • Taking tiny breaks can reboot our brain and can help us in thinking clearly.

Conclusion: Not everyone can manage to be creative under pressure. Tough deadlines can kill creativity. But reasonable deadlines can spur creative ideas. Your Turn Do you think deadlines destroy creativity? Express your point of view about this statement. Thank You
