DECIDUOUS MOLARS DR. SURAIYA HIRANI MSC TRAINEE SEMESTER III

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS Short crowns Thin enamel and dentin large pulp chamber Whiter than permanent D ivergent roots

MAXILLARY FIRST MOLAR

BUCCAL ASPECT: Widest from contact points mesiodistally Occlusal line slightly scalloped but no definite cusp form Smooth with little evidence of developmental grooves Smaller than maxillary second molar Roots are slender and long

LINGUAL ASPECT: Shorter mesiodistally than buccal portion Mesiolingual cusp is sharper, prominent and longest cusp Distolingual cusp is poorly define All three roots can be seen from this aspect Lingual root is largest than others

MESIAL ASPECT: Dimension of cervical third is greater than occlusal third Concavity is prominent on buccal outlineline of cervical third Mesiobuccal and lingual roots are visible

DISTAL ASPECT: Crown is narrow distally Distobuccal cusp is sharp Distolingual cusp is poorly define Cervical line curve occlusally All three roots can be seen from this aspect Point of bifurcation is at CEJ

OCCLUSAL ASPECT: Distance between distobuccal and mesiobuccal line angle is greater than distolingual and mesiolingual line angle Central fossa and mesial triangular fossa are present Buccal developmental groove divides mesiobuccal and distobuccal cusp occlusally Oblique ridge is found connecting mesiolingual and distobuccal cusp

MAXILLARY SECOND MOLAR

BUCCAL ASPECT: Resembles first molar Two buccal cusp and buccal groove is seen Crown is larger than first molar Crown is narrow at cervix Root appears slender from this aspect Bifurcation point is closed to cervical line of crown

LINGUAL ASPECT: Crown shows three cusp: mesiolingual . Distolingual and supplemental Supplemental cusp is also called cusp of caraberli Developmental groove is present which separate mesiolingual cusp from distolingual cusp All three roots are visible Lingual root is largest and thickest of all

MESIAL ASPECT: Crowns appears short buccolingually Mesiolingual cusp with cusp of carabeli appears largest as compare to mesiobuccal cusp Mesiobuccal root is broad and flat from this aspect

DISTAL ASPECT: Lesser than mesial aspect Distobuccal and distolingual cusp is of same length Cervical line is approximately straight All three roots are visible Distobuccal root is shorter and narrow from this aspect

OCCLUSAL ASPECT: Rhomboid in shape Well developed cusps are present Central fossa with mesial triangular fossa are present Mesial and distal marginal ridges are present Mesial and distal grooves are present

MANDIBULAR FIRST MOLAR

BUCCAL ASPECT: Mesial outline is straight Distal portion is shorter than mesial Two buccal cusp are distinct No developmental groove is present Mesial cusp is larger than distal Roots are long and slender

LINGUAL ASPECT: Crown and root converge lingually Distolingual cusp is rounded Mesiolingual cusp is long and sharp Mesial marginal ridge is well developed Cervical line is straight

MESIAL ASPECT: Mesiobuccal and mesiolingual cusp is prominent with well develop marginal ridge Cervical line curves upwards buccolingually Root end is flat and square Developmental depression is present

DISTAL ASPECT: Cervical line doesn’t drop buccally Length of crown is uniform buccally and lingually Distobuccal and distolingual cusps are not ahrp as mesial ones Distal marginal rigde is not well developed Distal root is rounded and shorter

OCCLUSAL ASPECT: Rhomboid in shape Mesiolingual cusp is largest and well developed Buccal and central grooves are present Distal marginal ridge and distal triangular fossa is prominent

MANDIBULAR SECOND MOLAR

BUCCAL ASPECT: Narrow mesiodistally from cervical as compare to occlusal Well developed mesiobuccal and distobuccal groove are present Three cusps: mesiobuccal , distobuccal and distal Roots are slender and long Point of bifurcation is at CEJ

LINGUAL ASPECT: Two lingual cusp are of equal dimension Short lingual groove is present Cervical line is straight Mesial portion of crown is higher as compare to distal

MESIAL ASPECT: Marginal ridge is high Crest of curvature on buccal portion is prominent Lingual cusp is longer and higher Mesial root is broad with blunt apex

DISTAL ASPECT: Crown is not as wide as mesially Distolingual cusp is well developed Cervical line is regular Distal root is flattened Root is taper apically

OCCLUSAL ASPECT: Three buccal cusps and two lingual cusps are present Well define triangular ridge is present Central groove is present Lingual groove is well define Mesial and distal grooves are present
