defence mechanism Raval Sweety P . F.Y. M.Sc. Nursing, GINERA
Defence mechanisms Defence mechanisms are methods of attempting to protect self and cope with basic drives or emotionally painful thoughts, feelings or events. The purpose of defence mechanism is to reduce or eliminate anxiety.
It can be helpful when used in very small doses, and if overused become ineffective and can lead to a breakdown of the personality.
Defence mechanisms Repression – Unconscious and involuntary forgetting of painful ideas, events and conflicts Denial – Unconscious refusal to admit an unacceptable idea or behaviour.
Projection : Unconsciously blaming someone else for one’s difficulties Intellectualization : Separation of the emotions of a painful event or situation from the facts involved; acknowledging the facts but not the emotions Undoing : Consciously doing something to counteract or make up for a transgression or wrong doing
Displacement – Unconsciously discharging pent-up feelings to a less threatening object
Sublimation : Consciously or unconsciously channelling instinctual drives into acceptable activities Compensatio n: Consciously covering up for a weakness by over emphasizing or making up a desirable trait.
Regression : Unconscious return to an earlier and more comfortable developmental level Dissociation : The unconscious separation of painful feelings and emotions from an unacceptable idea, situation or object
Rationalization : Individual justifies his failure and socially unacceptable behaviour by giving socially approved reasons Reaction formation –Replacing unacceptable feelings with their exact opposites Conversion : The unconscious expression of intra-psychic conflict symbolically through physical symptoms
The nurse recognize and understand maladaptive defence mechanisms that patients use. The nurse has to carefully point out these mechanisms and work with patients encourage such behaviours and discourage adaptive ones.
