Burden of disease
The results of the present study reveal that the burden of disease per 100,000 of the Korean population originates primarily from; cancer ( 1,525 Person Years, PYs), cardiovascular disease ( 1,492 PYs), digestive disease ( 1,140 PYs) diabetes mellitus ( 990 PYs) and certain neuro-psychiatric conditions ( 883 PYs).
South Korea has experienced occasional outbreaks of epidemic diseases, but the country has generally been effective in managing and controlling them. Cancer Cancer has been the No. 1 cause of death in South Korea since record keeping began. In 2020, 304,948 deaths were reported in South Korea, up 3.3 percent from a year earlier. The death rate of cancer stood at 161.1 deaths per 100,000 population in 2021 The most common cancer site is expected to be the thyroid, followed by the lung, colon and rectum, breast, and stomach. These five cancers are expected to represent half of the overall burden of cancer in Korea. The most common type of cancer leading to death is expected to be lung cancer, followed by liver , colorectal, pancreatic , and gallbladder cancers.
