DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS PREPARED BY:- PRANJAL SAXENA B.PHARMA.(8 TH SEM.)

DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS :- A Deodorants is a product applied to the body to prevent bad odor caused by the bacterial breakdown of perspiration in armpits, feet, and other areas of the body and do not reduce wetness. Antiperspirant affects the odor as well as prevent seating by affecting sweat glands.

PROPERTIES OF DEODORANTS AND ANTIPERSPIRANTS It should not be irritant to skin It should not be deteriorate clothing It should be safe and non toxic Easy to use and adhere well on skin Mask odor with perfume Absorb perspiration or inhibit the activity of gram positive bacteria, which cause bad odors..

ACTION OF DEODORANTS Infection is caused by anaerobic bacteria often produce strong odor due the production of short chain fatty acids, sulfur compounds, ammonia and polyamines. Microorganism and oxidative action on dead tissue and bacterial products, eliminate the fetid odor produced by necrosis.

DEODORANTS INGREDIENTS ANTI BACTERIAL ACTION:- BENZETHONIUM CHLORIDE CHLOROHEXIDINE ACETATE TRICHLORO HYDROXY DIPHENYL ETHER FORMULATION FORMS:- Aerosols Sticks Creams Roll On Soaps

EVALUATION OF DEODORANTS Both in vivo and vitro methods are available But in vitro techniques do not provide a reliable indicator of clinical effectiveness The two principal of deodorants efficacy are:- Determination of the effect of treatment of the skin microflora Olfactory assessment of the effect on skin odors In this method, olfactory assessment of the effect of deodorants on body may be performed by direct armpit sniffing

ACTION OF ANTIPERSPIRANTS Active ingredient will diffuse into the sweat and apocrine glands and insoluble hydroxide gel will be produced in sweat pores and thus physically blocking the release of secretory products by constricting the opening of the sweat glands ducts.

EVALUATION OF ANTIPERSPIRANTS Antiperspirants aim to bring about a temporary decrease in sweat production in an axillae. The most widely used procedure for efficacy testing of antiperspirants in a gravimetric method which involves the collection and weighing of axillary sweat under controlled condition.

INGREDIENTS The FDA publishes an OTC drug monograph that lists which ingredients are approved for use The ingredients on the list are limited to:- Natural antimicrobial agents: aluminum chlorhydrate , aluminum dichlorhydrate Aluminum chloride Aluminum zinchromium complexes Of these compounds, the most commonly used is aluminum zinconiumtetrachlorohydrex glycine Alcohol is ingredient present in some rolls on, aerosols and gels The active ingredients of antiperspirants and deodorants are often dissolved in alcohol because it dries quickly once applied to the skin and gives an immediate sense of coolness

WHY CHOOSE A DEODORANTS OVER ANTIPERSPIRANTS Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of swear and by antiseptic action against bacteria Deodorants are preferable because they don’t interfere with sweating, a cooling process. Antiperspirants because of their ability to reduce perspiration and thus diminish the medium is a factor in the development of axillary odor, can claim to be deodorants.
