water.Thisvehicleisusedfortransportingpeopleorgoodsbysea
oranyotherbodyofwater.Ashipisacomplexstructuremadeup
ofmanyparts.
Thesearesomebasicpartsofaship:

acompartmentorahullofaship.Thefloorof
aship.Itisasolidsurfaceservingasaroofand
floor.
Thebulbmodifiesthewaythewaterflows
aroundthehull,reducingdragandthus
increasingspeed,range,fuelefficiency,and
stability.Abulbousbowalsoincreasesthe
buoyancyoftheforwardpartandhence
reducesthepitchingoftheshiptoasmall
degree.

Directions and Positions on Board a Ship
Thefrontendofashipisthebow.Whenyoumovetowardthebow,
youaregoingforward.Therearofashipisthestern.Whenyou
movetowardthestern,youaregoingaft.
Whenashipismoving,eitherbypowerorsail,itisunderway.Aship
movingforwardisahead.Whentheshipmovesbackwards,itis
astern.
Ifyouareintherearoftheshiplookingforward,therightsideofthe
shipisthestarboardside;theleftsideistheportside.
Thefrontrightsideoftheshipisthestarboardbow;thefrontleftis
theportbow.Therightrearoftheshipisthestarboardquarter;the
leftrearistheportquarter.

makeshislifesimpler,thankstotechnology.Atpresent,seafarers
aretrainedtoknowthefunctionandoperationofmodern
navigationalequipment.Thisequipmentmakesthejourneyatsea
easierandsafer.Withmodernfacilitiesandautomation,aship
todayhasseveraladvancednavigationalequipmentsystemsthat
giveprecisedataforthevoyage.

Thisisusedtogetplanneddirectionforthe
voyage.
Echosounder:Thisinstrumentisusedtomeasure
thedepthofthewaterbelowtheship’sbottom.It
usessoundwaves.

mechanical,andelectricalsystems.Thiscontrols
theship’ssteeringsystemfromaremotelocation

Speed&DistanceLogDevice:Itisusedto

ashipfromasetpoint.
ARPA:AutomaticRadarPlottingAidshowsthe
positionofashipandothervesselsnearby.The
radardisplaysthepositionoftheshipsthatare
nearandselectsthecourseforthevesselby
avoidinganykindofcollision.
GyroCompass:itisusedtofindtheright
