DESCRIPTORS OF MOTION
topics Speed Velocity Acceleration 2
speed
speed description of how fast or slow an object moves rate at which an object changes its location. l ike distance, speed is a scalar quantity because it only considers magnitude but not direction. A VERAGE SPEED - the distance travelled divided by the time it takes to travel the distance SI unit : meters per second (m/s) other units: kilometers per hour (km/h) miles per hour (mph) 4
speed Example 1 Elma Muros , the fastest female sprinter in Southeast Asia, can run a 200-m distance course in 24.42 seconds. What is Elma’s speed? 5
speed Example 2 A jeepney moves along a straight road at an average speed of 10m/s. What is the distance travelled by the jeepney in 2.5 s? 6
velocity
velocity “speed having direction” a vector quantity having both magnitude and direction rate of change of displacement SI unit : meters per second (m/s) Other units: kilometers per hour (km/h), or miles per hour (mph) (direction of the motion is included) Average velocity - displacement divided by the time over which the displacement occurs. 8
velocity INSTANTANEOUS VELOCITY - velocity at a specific moment Example 1 Nicole drove to the city to pick up a friend. She went 3000 km east in about 10 hours. Calculate her velocity. 9
velocity INSTANTANEOUS VELOCITY - velocity at a specific moment Example 1 Nicole drove to the city to pick up a friend. She went 3000 km east in about 10 hours. Calculate her velocity. 10
velocity Example 2 A car travels at uniform velocity with a distance of 100 m west in 4 seconds. What is the velocity of the car? Example 3 What is the displacement covered by a bus if it has a velocity of 120 km/h north in 5 hours? 11
acceleration
acceleration tells how fast an object or a body changes its velocity a n object is accelerating when (a) it is travelling in one direction with changing speed (either speeding up or slowing down), (b) moving at a constant speed but changes its direction, and (c) when it changes both the speed and its direction . In other words, acceleration is the rate of change in velocity . Slowing down is called deceleration SI unit : meters per second per second (m/s/s) or meters per second squared (m/s2) Other units: kilometers per hour per hour (km/h/h or km/h2) and miles per hour per hour (mi/h/h or mi/h2) 13
acceleration 14 Examine the figure below showing the velocity of the car changing.
acceleration 15 Example 1 Examine the figure below showing the velocity of the car changing.
acceleration Example 2 A car starts to move and reaches the velocity 80m/s in 10 seconds. Calculate the acceleration of this car. 16

acceleration Example 3 A boy having 3m/s² acceleration starts to run. Calculate the boy’s final velocity after 15 seconds? 18
