DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF KATSINA STATE TOURISM MANAMGEMENT SYSTEM BY   NAME REG NO: ANAS HAMIDAN ABUBAKAR ND/COM/22/0086 ALIYU SANUSI ND/COM/22/0015 USMAN D IBRAHIM ND/COM/22/0099   A Research Project Submitted to the Department of Computer Science, Federal Polytechnic Daura , Katsina State, in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Award of National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science.   October, 2024 UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF SADISU MATI

INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Tourism is the travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family, and business purposes, usually for a limited duration. It is an essential activity for nations because of its direct effects on social, cultural, educational, and economic sectors of national societies and their international relations ( Gisore R., 2015). According to the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, tourism is defined as the commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest. Tourism can be described as the short-term movement of people to places some distance away from their normal place of residence for pleasurable activities ( Swarbrook and Horner, 2020). A person traveling within their country is termed a domestic tourist, while crossing international borders makes them an international tourist. For instance, visitors to the Three Sisters Hills in Katsina State for the annual December festival are domestic tourists, while international tourists may visit Katsina’s iconic sites like the Mairuwa and Kogin Kano Game Reserves. Tourism is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most dynamic industries, significantly impacting national economies by creating employment opportunities, enhancing infrastructure, and providing a rich source of revenue. It employs a wide variety of professionals, from doctors and engineers to dancers and entertainers. In places like Katsina State, the tourism sector has the potential to employ thousands, as seen in other tourism-oriented nations like Spain and Italy, where over seventy percent of the workforce is involved in the industry. .

Existing System Looking into the current existing manual system of tourism, whenever a tourist wants to visit a specific place, or needs to be book himself for tourism, he has to physically come and book himself with the ministry for tourism and culture or in some cases, he has to give them ministry a call and ask for booking. This process is too lengthy to the tourist and not to mention time consuming. And on the administrative side, the ministry has to keep all manual records of every tourists and their financial transactions and visitation history. This process is so fatal in terms of having been in operation for a long time and also in terms of accuracy and redundancy.

Problem Background This project is undertaken to address the following challenges: Delays in handling inquiries and making bookings, alongside poor customer service and feedback. Unauthorized access to vital documents and records, leading to displacement of information. Limited communication about the availability of tourist locations and accommodations, causing unplanned expenses or discomfort for tourists. These issues, particularly poor information flow and inefficient service, hinder tourists from booking their trips effectively due to the inefficiencies of the current system. Hence, a more efficient system is needed to address these issues after a structural analysis of the existing system.

Aims The aim of this project is to develop a suitable web-based management system for tourism activities within Katsina State. Objectives Our strategic priorities are centered on the following objectives: To explore the challenges in managing the current manual tourism system. To design a web-based system that enhances the accuracy and timeliness of information while resolving delays caused by the existing manual system. To implement a user-friendly system that promotes appreciation of Katsina State’s natural resources and serves as a complementary tool for tourism management.
