Define and Ideate Prof. Aditya S. Dhobale Mechanical Engineering Department N.K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology, Solapur - Prof. Aditya S. Dhobale, NKOCET, Solapur 1

Defining the Problem Statement - A concise articulation of the issue you aim to address. - Key Components: 1. Who is the user? 2. What is the problem? 3. Why does it matter? - Example: "University students need an intuitive task management tool to organize schedules, prioritize task s, and manage projects."

Techniques for Problem Framing 5 Whys Technique: What It Is: Repeatedly ask "Why" to uncover the root cause of a problem. Example: Problem: Students are not using the task management app effectively. Why 1: They don’t find the app intuitive. Why 2: The onboarding process is unclear. Why 3: The app interface is cluttered. Why 4: Features are not prioritized based on user needs. Why 5: Insufficient user research during design.

Techniques for Problem Framing Point of View (POV) Statement What It Is: A human-centered statement that captures the user's need and insight. Format: [ User ] needs a way to [ need ] because [ insight ]. Example: A first-year student needs a way to manage daily assignments because they feel irritated by the increased workload compared to high school .

Techniques for Problem Framing Problem Reframing What It Is: Looking at the problem from multiple perspectives to discover new opportunities. Example: Original Problem: "How can we make students use the app more?" Reframed Problem: "How can we design the app to better address students' needs?"

Ideation/Brainstorming Techniques Mind Mapping What It Is: A visual tool that organizes ideas and shows relationships between them. How It Works: Write the main problem or topic at the center of a page. Draw branches outward to represent related ideas or themes. Add sub-branches for details and expand as needed. Example for Task Management App: Central Node: "Task Management Features." Branches: "Notifications," "Usability," "Integration." Sub-Branches: "Reminders," "Color-coded tasks," "Sync with calendar."

Ideation/Brainstorming Techniques SCAMPER: What It Is: A method for idea generation by modifying existing concepts. What SCAMPER Stands For: S ubstitute : Replace components. C ombine : Merge ideas. A dapt : Adjust to fit a new purpose. M odify: Change aspects. P ut to another use : Find new applications. E liminate : Remove unnecessary parts. R everse : Flip the problem.

Ideation/Brainstorming Techniques Crazy 8s What It Is: A fast-paced sketching exercise to generate 8 ideas in 8 minutes. How It Works: Divide a sheet into 8 sections. Set a timer for 1 minute per section. Sketch one idea in each section quickly without overthinking.

- Prof. Aditya S. Dhobale, NKOCET, Solapur 10 Crazy 8s

Idea Evaluation and Selection Evaluation Criteria: Criteria to evaluate the ideas Example: 1. Feasibility: Is it achievable? 2. Desirability: Does it resonate with users? 3. Viability: Is it sustainable? - Use a scoring table to prioritize ideas.

Example: Evaluation Table Idea Feasibility Desirability Viability Total Score Color-coded categories 5 5 5 15 Voice notifications 4 5 4 13 Drag-and-drop interface 5 4 5 14 Prioritization and Selection: Focus on high-scoring ideas. Ensure they align with the problem statement. Example Selected Ideas: Color-coded categories. Drag-and-drop interface.

Summary Define Stage: Articulate the problem clearly using techniques like the 5 Whys, POV statements, and problem reframing. Ideate Stage: Generate diverse ideas using brainstorming techniques such as Mind Mapping, SCAMPER, and Crazy 8s. Idea Evaluation: Use feasibility, desirability, and viability criteria to prioritize and select ideas for prototyping.
