About This Presentation

A brief discussion on how to design an effective survey questionnaire

Designing Survey
Questionnaires

Survey Questionnaires
Crafting effective survey
questionnaires is a crucial step in
gathering valuable insights. This
presentation will guide you through the
key aspects of designing and
administering survey questionnaires
to ensure your data collection is
robust and informative.
MM

Types of Survey Questions
Multiple Choice
Offer a set of pre-defined options for respondents to choose
from, useful for collecting structured data.
Open-Ended
Allow respondents to provide their own answers in their own
words, useful for gathering rich, qualitative feedback.
Rating Scales
Use a numerical or descriptive scale to gauge respondent
opinions and attitudes on a topic.

Designing
Effective Questions
1Clear and Concise
Ensure questions are easy to understand
and unambiguous.
Questions should be directly relevant to
your research objectives.
Avoid leading or loaded questions that
may sway respondent answers.
Questions should follow a natural
progression and sequence.
2Relevant
3Unbiased
4Logical Flow

Ordering and
Formatting Questions
Begin with engaging and interesting
questions to capture attention.
Organize questions into logical
sections and themes.
Conclude with questions that provide
deeper insights or demographic info.
1Start Strong
2Group Logically
3End Thoughtfully

Pretesting and Revising
the Questionnaire
Review
Carefully review the questionnaire for
clarity, flow, and completeness.
Pilot Test
Conduct a small-scale pilot test to gather
feedback and identify issues.
Revise
Incorporate feedback to refine and
improve the questionnaire design.

Administering the
Survey Questionnaire
Distribution
Deliver the questionnaire to the target
audience through various channels.
Data Collection
Gather responses and monitor the
progress of the survey deployment.
Follow-Up
Reach out to non-respondents to
encourage participation and
completion.

Validating Survey
Questionnaire
Reliability
Ensure the
questionnaire
consistently produces
the same results over
time.
Validity
Verify that the
questionnaire
accurately measures
what it aims to
measure.
Completeness
Confirm that the
questionnaire covers all
the necessary aspects
of the research.
Bias Reduction
Minimize potential
sources of bias that
could skew the survey
results.

Basic Procedures in Designing
Quantitative Survey Questions
1Select the type of quantitative survey question
The objective of the research is reflected in the chosen type of
quantitative survey question. For the respondents to have a clear
understanding of the survey, researchers should select the desired
type of quantitative survey question.
Decide on the dependent and independent variables and also the
targetaudiences, regardless of the type of selected quantitative survey
question (descriptive, comparative or relationship based),
2Recognize the filtered dependent and independent variables
along with the target group/s

Quantitative Survey Questions
Levels of measurement variables
There are four levels of measurement variables – one of
which can be chosen for creating quantitative survey
questions. Nominal variables indicate the names of
variables, Ordinal variables indicate names and order of
variables, Interval variables indicate name, order and an
established interval between ordered variables and Ratio
variables indicate absolute zero value.

Basic Procedures in Designing
Quantitative Survey Questions
A variable can not only be calculated but also can be
manipulated and controlled. For descriptive survey
questions, there can be multiple variables for which
questions can be formed. In the other two types of
quantitative survey questions (comparative and
relationship-based), dependent and independent variables
are to be decided. Independent variables are those which
are manipulated in order to observe the change in the
dependent variables

3Choose the right structure according to the decided type of
quantitative survey question
As discussed in the previous section, appropriate structures have to
be chosen to create quantitative survey questions. The intention of
creating these survey questions should align with the structure of the
question
Analyze the ease of reading these questions once the right structure is in
place. Will the respondents be able to easily understand the questions?
Ensure this factor before finalizing the quantitative survey questions
4Note the roadblocks you are trying to solve to create a
thorough survey question
